PRIMARYJASSOJASSO warns against fictitious-refund scams ↗
3 Nov, 13:41 JST
October 3, 2025 notice: scam calls or letters impersonating JASSO seek fictitious refunds. Contact points are schools and scholarship consultation centers.
Editor’s take
Scam calls and letters posing as an agency are like fake invoices arriving at home: they exploit confusion and institutional trust. If a victim makes the requested transfer, financial loss follows, while the warning gives contact methods and consultation points but no case-specific details.

PRIMARYKokusenBe cautious with leaseback contracts ↗
3 Nov, 13:41 JST
A prolonged sales pitch led to a leaseback sale at ¥12 million; seeking cancellation brought demands for the ¥500,000 deposit plus a ¥500,000 penalty.
Editor’s take
Leaseback’s imbalance lies in weak pre-contract disclosure and the heavy cost of exit. A seller who signs without understanding the terms may later owe a substantial penalty. A home is the vessel of everyday life, not a financial product to be traded lightly.

A couple paid 40 million yen for an apartment. Three years later, monthly upkeep rose from 70,000 to 130,000 yen; selling at the original price became difficult.

PRESSRedditJapan Working Holiday: Need Both NHI and Private Travel Insurance? ↗
25 Oct, 00:12 JST
An approved Japan Working Holiday visa holder asks if NHI and travel insurance are both needed, what NHI costs with little income, and what private cover includes.
Editor’s take
NHI and private travel insurance are like a house key and drain cover for different failures. If private cover pays costs NHI excludes, the combination closes gaps; if it excludes costs NHI already covers, that premium may add little. Missing premiums and terms make the overlap impossible to judge.

Hi everyone, I’m from the UK and have already had my Japan Working Holiday visa approved. I’m now trying to sort out health/medical insurance before I leave. My understanding is that once I’m living in Japan, I’ll need to register for Japanese National Health Insurance (NHI), even if I’m not working and have £0 income initially. I’m also planning to buy a 12-month Working Holiday/travel insurance policy from the UK before I leave, mainly for things like emergency medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, etc. A few things I’m unsure about: Is it normal/recommended to have **both NHI and private travel insurance**? How much did you actually pay for NHI when you first arrived, particularly if you had little/no income? If I forget to register for NHI immediately after arriving, what happens? I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has recently done a Japan Working Holiday, especially UK citizens. Thanks!

PRESSRedditAddress used only for Mos Burger draws fake e-Tax phishing mail ↗
19 Oct, 15:01 JST
A Reddit poster says phishing messages posing as Japan's e-Tax system arrived at an address used only for Mos Burger, and urges people to double-check mail as breaches hit Japanese services.
Editor’s take
Splitting addresses per signup is less like changing a lock and more like handing the same key to every shop on the street. Microsoft and Japan's police dismantled a scam-message marketplace. Over a billion malicious messages since January went via YAM Store and two other services.

The Yomiuri Shimbun reports that information on groups and individuals who used the Foreign Worker Employment Support Desk may have leaked, including names, company names and residence-status categories entered into forms when attending events.
Editor’s take
Personal data a support desk collects is handed over for one purpose and then disappears from the owner's view. PRESSRedditJapan Post changes its international process: how to ship to the US now ↗
18 Oct, 18:03 JST
A poster describes a new system for parcels to the US: an app instead of a QR code, processing and customs fees paid, and a printed form. Questions remain about cutting the form, the pouch, and folding the label.
Editor’s take
Even when the paperwork moves onto a phone, the last judgment — cut the sheet or keep it whole, fold the label or not — still lands on the person standing at the counter. If clerks handle the same form differently each time, the app has not removed the friction, only moved it from the system onto the sender. It is like assembling a delivery slip yourself: the sticker goes on, but nobody says who owns the mistake.

Hi. With this new system of shipments of packages to US, instead of using QR codes now they make it through other app. I paid for the processing and customs fees. Printed the paper For those who already used it I have some questions: 1) In the lower part there are two areas: one for sender to keep and one for post office. Should I cut them and present them to the post ready to process? Or I should keep the whole paper uncut before presenting to clerk? 2) It is written then I will be given the pouch at the post office. Does it mean that the size of the package should always accommodate this printed label and pouch? Is it permitted to fold the label and wrap it around the package/envelope?

Ex-cyber police chief Kawahara says driver's license leaks are the top personal-data risk, urging stricter ID checks, OS updates and unique passwords.
Editor’s take
Stricter checks may deter crime, but centering trust in a driver's license amplifies leak damage. Success depends less on users' habits than on companies not keeping identity documents long. PRESSRedditA Tokyo music-school graduate asks r/japanlife how to find entry-level work in Japan's live event industry ↗

A poster on r/japanlife who finished music vocational school in Tokyo this year and has helped with live concert operations asks where entry-level music and live-event jobs, industry job boards and networking are found.
Editor’s take
The door into this industry looks less like a map of listings than like the number of times someone at a venue remembered your name. I'm interested in getting started in Japan's music and live event industry, particularly in Tokyo. I graduated from a music vocational school in Tokyo earlier this year and recently gained some hands-on experience helping with live concert operations. I understand that this subreddit may not be the right place for direct job-seeking posts, so I've posted one in other relevant subreddits. Here, I'd like to ask about the industry itself. For those familiar with the field: \-Where can I find entry-level opportunities in music and live event operations? Are there any useful industry-specific job boards or networking opportunities? \-Is it generally difficult for foreigners to break into Japan's music and live event industry? Are there relatively few opportunities for non-Japanese applicants? \-What would you recommend to someone trying to break into this industry? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

A poster who struggles to focus at school dislikes their psychiatrist at Tokyo Mental Health and asks for recommendations, seeking a diagnosis and test support.
Editor’s take
Whether support works depends less on the name of the service than on whether the relationship with the person providing it can last. In a room where your problems are dismissed or laughed at, no diagnosis carries much weight. A shoe that does not fit the foot will not be walked in for long.

ive been suspected of having a cocktail of disorders that impair my ability to focus at school. As of now, ive been "rawdogging it" for a while. getting a diagnosis and treatment for these disorders would really help + give me some support on standardized tests (which I really struggle to take without any support). If anyone here goes to Tokyo Mental Health for therapy, is there a psychiatrist that you really like? i recently started therapy at Tokyo Mental Health but i sorta dislike my psychiatrist and because of this its hard for me to open up to this individual 🥀 between dismissing my problems, straight up ignoring me, and laughing at my expense (albeit as a joke), i genuinely think them and i are very different and very incompatible people. i would really appreciate if people could share their experience with Tokyo Mental Health! i really need a diagnosis and i want to leave each therapy session without feeling worse...

A US chemistry undergraduate who spent a year at Waseda wants to return to Tokyo and work there for a year or two after graduating in the spring, and asks about options beyond teaching English.
Editor’s take
Missing the convenience of a city can pull longer and harder than a career plan. A workable answer here most likely turns on the degree and language conditions employers set, not on how much the person loved Tokyo. Hi yall, I wanted to ask anyone who was also in the same position as me. I am currently an undergraduate student in the US getting my degree in Chem with a near focus in premed. Last year I was given the opportunity to study abroad at Waseda for a year and it was overall a life changing experience and ever since I've been back I have been near miserable. I love the US don't get me wrong, but in terms of convenience, I love Tokyo. I do want to work for a year and two after I graduate in the spring but I'm not sure how. I know teaching English is the standard but I want to know if there are other options. I've worked in the arts before in administion and research but I've also worked in food so I'm not sure what else I can do in Japan in terms of work. My Japanese is also conversational but it has gotten rougher since I've landed back but I also do speak Spanish fluently. I do plan on improving my Japanese but we'll see how that goes since I'm terribly busy trying to catch up on all of my degree requirements I missed while abroad. If working as an English teacher is the only way then I guess I'll do that. Please let me know if anyone has taken a different route or any tips I'm at a lost.

17 Oct, 00:26 JST
A Japanese agency has canceled a mistakenly issued earthquake warning. The error has disrupted train services.
Editor’s take
A public warning system earns trust by admitting and canceling errors, but the correction cost lands on commuters as disrupted trains. It is like a bridge inspection mistake that closes a road: safety judgments and daily burdens sit on the same structure. Whether the error recurs depends on identifying its cause and adding redundancy to the warning decision.

PRESSライブドア 国内Japan quake alert briefly showed magnitude 9.9 before being cancelled ↗
16 Oct, 13:32 JST
On the 16th, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued an emergency earthquake warning and later cancelled it; the system briefly computed and displayed a magnitude of 9.9. That figure corresponds to roughly 22 times the energy of the magnitude 9.0 Great East Japan Earthquake.
Editor’s take
A quake alert is like a smoke detector: it saves you only as long as you trust it enough not to pull the battery. Retracting the message does not undo the moment of doubt it created, and the credibility spent here behaves like stock drawn down. If similar miscalculations surface again, users will move toward switching the alerts off.

Hi everyone! I’m a foreigner living in Japan, and I’m interested in starting an online side hustle selling digital products (made with the help of AI) on platforms like Etsy and Gumroad. Are there other foreigners in Japan who sell digital products online? If so, how do you handle Japan’s regulations and taxes for an online business? In particular, I’m wondering about: * Whether you need to register anything (e.g., a business start-up notification) and how your visa status affects side income * How you report and pay taxes on income from overseas platforms * Any other policies or pitfalls I should know about I’m excited to get started, but I’m concerned about getting the legal side right. Any advice or personal experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

PRIMARYKokusenSuspect phishing even in emails from services you already use, watchdog says ↗
15 Oct, 12:42 JST
Phishing can impersonate familiar apps; user entered card details via a link and later saw 200,000 yen in unauthorized charges. Use official bookmarks or apps.
Editor’s take
Trusting a familiar logo is like checking a lock by looking at the door from the street. The practical test is not whether a message feels genuine but whether the card statement shows charges you did not make, and that test can be failed quietly for a long time. If warnings keep repeating while losses continue, the problem is less about individual attention than about systems that let impersonation work.

PRESSライブドア 国内Tokyo University picks runner-up in preference vote, faculty demand explanation ↗
19 Oct, 07:15 JST
Yuko Fujigaki, who placed second in an internal preference vote, was chosen on Sept. 28 as the University of Tokyo's next president; faculty members submitted a petition on Oct. 13 asking for an explanation, with about 500 supporters.
Editor’s take
A decision can follow the rules and still leave the person chosen without a convincing mandate, because legitimacy rests on explanation as much as procedure. It is like cooking exactly to the recipe but swapping an ingredient without saying so: the dish may be fine, and the people at the table still feel something was kept from them. Editor’s take

Hi everyone! I’ll be arriving in Japan on December 1st, 2026, on a Working Holiday Visa and am planning to live and work in either Tokyo or Yokohama, depending on accommodation and job opportunities. I’m wondering how difficult it is to find a part-time job without an official JLPT certificate. I’ve studied Japanese at university and completed Genki I and II, as well as Minna no Nihongo. I’ve also started studying Tobira: Gateway to Advanced Japanese. I’d estimate my Japanese level to be somewhere around N4–N3, although I haven’t taken the official JLPT. I’m still working on improving my speaking and listening skills, especially in everyday conversations. I have previous experience working in retail such as sales of either clothing or electronics, as a barista, and in a bakery. Mostly my workplaces have been at an airport, so I’m quite familiar with customer service and working in busy environments. Ideally, I’d love to find something in retail, a café, bakery, restaurant, or hotel, but I’m also open to cleaning and other part-time opportunities. And other positions that accept working holidaymakers. A conbini would also be fine. I’d love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation! How difficult was it to find a part-time job in Tokyo or Yokohama without JLPT certification? Do Japanese employers care more about actual communication skills than JLPT certificates? Are there more opportunities for working holidaymakers in Tokyo compared to Yokohama? What kinds of jobs would you recommend for someone at my Japanese level? Would you recommend applying before arriving in Japan or waiting until I’m there? Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! 😊

PRESSRedditMinimising move out restoration costs (with a peculiar landlord)? ↗
17 Oct, 16:33 JST
A Tokyo renter who moved out in August was asked to pay ¥250,000 for full restoration after the landlord replaced wallpaper, flooring, and the closet interior.
Editor’s take
Restoration costs should be settled by law and contract, but an elderly landlord demanding full payment unilaterally shows an information gap. When responsibility stays vague, trust erodes with each move-out. It is like a shared kitchen with no agreed dishwasher, so the last user cleans everything.

Tokyo resident. I moved out of an apartment at the end of August, and just now I just got a phone call from my former landlord to say he has finished restoring the apartment and wants me to pay the whole fee (about 25万). After 7 years there I had left some tears and small marks on the wallpaper, and maybe a scratch on the floor (might have been there already though), but otherwise in pretty good condition. However, he seems to have revamped the whole thing: new wallpaper, floor, even the inside of the closet. I brought up the ‘useful life’ (耐用年数) of these items and how to some extent these are no longer the tenant’s responsibility and there’s a way to calculate that, but he had no idea what I was talking about. He’s a very old guy who is losing his mind a little - it sounds like he just called someone to fix up the apartment, didn’t really make a record of anything, and now the bill has arrived he wants me to pay it. He says he will hand me that bill, but I’m not sure where to go from there. It’s kind of difficult to start negotiating with someone who doesn’t even realise negotiating is an option. Any advice?

Editor’s take

Hi! I'm moving to Osaka from Canada for work in January. I'm only on one pill, a PPI (20 mg rabeprazole). I'm fine when I'm on it, but get severe reflux if I don't take it. What exactly should I be doing to ensure the continuation of my care after moving? I read online the standard maintenance dose in Japan is 10 mg, but for me it's 20 mg. Do I just get a doctor's note and bring it to a clinic in Osaka? Should I be bringing anything else? Thank you!

PRESSライブドア 国内Patients wait for Japan to approve a pancreatic cancer drug costing over ¥5 million a month ↗

Japan is petitioned to approve daraxonrasib, a US-cleared pancreatic cancer drug. One patient plans to import it unapproved at over ¥5 million a month. The health ministry has designated it an orphan drug but will not discuss an individual application.
Editor’s take
Waiting for an unapproved drug is not a slow process for the patient; it is time they can feel running out. When a foreign approval and a domestic review run on separate clocks, the cost is pushed back onto the individual. Price deciding who gets treated is a design failure, not market efficiency.

One of two tropical depressions in the southern seas is forecast to become a typhoon, which would be the 30th of the year and the first time in 13 years the annual count reaches 30. Japanese forecasts suggest an approach toward Honshu while US forecasts suggest it stalls.

I’m currently working in Australia as a network administrator, but I only started this role in September this year. I am currently 37 years old, and until this year, I had no IT experience. Also, over the past six years, I’ve worked in various industries, including hospitality, warehousing, and food production. Could you guys please give me a real, honest, and brutal opinion on my chances of landing a data centre role in Japan? I will have a spouse visa, but I can not speak Japanese. However, I managed to land an IT role at one of the major telecommunications companies here in Australia, and I also have a master’s degree in cybersecurity. Thanks guys!! Waiting for the brutal and honest opinions 🥲

PRESSRedditPermanent employee in Japan seeks labour lawyer over harassment and dismissal threats ↗
16 Oct, 14:50 JST
A permanent employee in Japan says a manager threatened dismissal over sick-day leave requests and personal phone use, repeatedly talked over them in a meeting room and blocked them from leaving; they are asking about the Labour Standards Inspection Office.
Editor’s take
Permanent status is the ground you stand on and also the reason it feels costly to move. Like losing the receipt for a purchase, a complaint without dates and words leaves only your own account as evidence, and a departure offer can then be recorded as agreement. Whether the labour standards office acts turns less on how bad it felt than on whether you can show who said what, and when.

Hi everyone, I'm a permanent employee (正社員) working in Japan, and I'm looking for advice from a labour lawyer or anyone who has dealt with workplace harassment and the Labour Standards Inspection Office (労働基準監督署). My manager has been behaving increasingly aggressively towards me and other employees. The main issues are: \- Threats of dismissal: My manager has threatened to dismiss me because I refuse to submit leave (paid or unpaid) when I become sick and refuse to use my personal mobile phone for work. \- Intimidating behaviour: During a recent conversation, he took me into a meeting room, repeatedly talked over me and accused me of various things without providing specific examples. \- Physically blocking me from leaving: When I no longer wanted to continue the conversation in that state, he physically blocked me from leaving the room. \- Pressure to sign a new contract: He has tried to force me and other employees to sign a new contract because we do not want to share personal details with clients or use our personal devices for work. \- Threats towards other employees: I understand that other staff members have also experienced threatening behaviour from him. \- Ongoing micromanagement: He frequently micromanages employees, including people outside his own team. This is not the first time I have had problems with my manager, but the latest incident was the worst so far. I have audio recordings of the conversations and have already contacted HR by email and message. My questions are: 1. Could this behaviour constitute power harassment (パワーハラスメント) under Japanese law? 2. Can I report this to the Labour Standards Inspection Office or another labour authority? If so, which office would be appropriate? 3. Can I make a report anonymously, or would I need to provide my identity? 4. Could my employer legally dismiss me

PRESSライブドア 国内Victims say PTSD from sexual violence still fails to count as injury ↗
16 Oct, 12:00 JST
Women victimized in a case involving a former chief prosecutor said at a press conference that PTSD is rarely recognized as injury. A lawyer said only about 1% of such cases are pursued as injury charges. A group of lawyers, medical workers and survivors was launched at the event.
Editor’s take
Whether a wounded mind reaches the legal category of injury is currently settled by how easy a case is to file, not by how severe the symptoms are. A low count reflects a narrow doorway, not a small amount of harm. A broken bone shows up on an X-ray; a flashback does not show up in a photograph, and procedures built around what shows up leave the rest outside. hey :) I’m moving to Japan in Dec was just looking to get some advice on a few things from anyone local? my main question is location, I’m choosing between a few places right now, and looking for a particular vibe (idk if it exist) 😂 but firstly I would love a place that has more younger people? and focused on fitness. I love the area where theres people jogging, and ideally with some nice scenary like a park and/or next to the river I think the hard part is I would love for the same place to look pretty at night and busy as well? love the idea of walking out at 10pm and still see people about and pretty lights from the buildings. I feel like these kind of contradict each other 😭 but hey figured I might ask? so far I think Shibuya is the only thing in my radar. yoyogi park for morning jogs and obviously Shibuya is still busy at night. but any other options?

Ive looked on places like japan-dev and there are no jobs with c++ that don't require professional experience or a degree, I'm currently around N5 level which will likely be improved before I turn 18 and start applying to places. Is there any places to find ANY job that sponsors visas, it doesn't have to fit those skills I listed. Or would going to a university in Japan to get a software development degree be a better path, Im pretty sure software development isn't a very good job right but its the only skill I have. Any help would be very appreciated, Thanks 🥰

My cousin got a job offer (to work in a car factory) for 400,000 yen (depend on criteria and job category) with few bonuses like “perfect attendance allowance” etc… we are considering of sending him or not not knowing the life of Japan and its work conditions. Also what are some drawbacks. Also how is work life like in a factory in Japan? Is it a fortune or a risk? Also is it friendly for wanderlusters (people who love to travel occasionally)? How long is the vacation? Thanks.

PRESSRedditTokyo's record rainfall streak ends after 37 days ↗
4 Oct, 20:35 JST
Tokyo's consecutive days of rain ended at 37, surpassing the previous record of 33 days set in 2019.
Editor’s take
When the sky finally clears, it is easy to forget that a stretch of weather, like a long mood, can quietly shape a city. Enjoying the brightness without overthinking it is itself a small, reasonable response.

PRESSRedditCan ¥200,000 a month cover student life in Osaka/Tokyo plus two trips a month? ↗
3 Oct, 18:49 JST
A Reddit post from a couple moving to Japan as research students, one at Osaka University and the other at the University of Tokyo, asks whether a ¥200,000 monthly stipend each is enough after rent, utilities, food, transport, insurance, and phone bills, while also meeting twice a month across the Osaka–Tokyo corridor.

- What remains unknown

Hi everyone, My partner and I will be coming to Japan as international students/research students. I’ll be based at **Osaka University**, while my partner will be at the **University of Tokyo**. We will each receive around **¥200,000 per month** as our stipend. We’re trying to understand how comfortable this budget would be after rent, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, phone, etc. A few details: * I’ll mostly **cook at home**, so I don’t expect to eat out very often. * We’ll probably stay in university/international student accommodation if possible. * My partner will be living in Tokyo and I’ll be in Osaka. * We want to **meet at least twice a month**, either one of us travelling Tokyo ↔ Osaka or travelling somewhere together for a weekend. * So we also need to account for Shinkansen/bus/flight costs and occasional weekend trips. For people currently studying/living in **Osaka or Tokyo**, is **¥200,000 per person per month** enough to live reasonably without constantly worrying about money? Also, would meeting/travelling together **twice a month** be realistic on this stipend, or would transportation between Tokyo and Osaka eat up too much of the budget? Would really appreciate if anyone could share their approximate monthly expenses for: * Rent/dorm * Groceries * Utilities * Transportation * Health insurance * Phone/internet * Entertainment/travel Thanks!
