r/movingtojapan · u/8bit_heartbeats · 1 points · 2 comments · General Hi everyone, I’m a 22-year-old currently working in the hospitality industry, but my ultimate dream is to move to Japan and work as a Game Programmer at major studios like Nintendo, Capcom, Square Enix, and the others. Gaming has been my life since I was a kid (I love single-player games and action titles, though I don't play MOBAs or competitive online games). I truly believe that to love your job, you have to love the industry you're in. However, I'm starting from scratch with zero savings, and I'm currently locked into my hospitality career path. Here is my master plan to break out of hospitality and get into HAL Senmon Gakkou (Game Programming course): 1. Step 1: Finish my current overseas hospitality contract and save up around 75 million IDR (approx. ¥700,000 / $4,500 USD). I'll use a chunk of this to buy a high-spec laptop for coding/game dev. 2. Step 2 (Choose plan A or B): Plan A: Work in Japan for 3 years using the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa in Kaigo (Caregiving). Because of higher wages and company-subsidized housing in Kaigo, I estimate saving up around ¥4.5M to ¥5M JPY (\~$30k USD) to self-fund my tuition at HAL. Plan B: Take a Newspaper Scholarship to study at a Japanese language school for 2 years (free tuition/housing in exchange for delivering newspapers), then use my savings + part-time job money for HAL. 3. Step 3: Enroll in HAL’s Game Programming Course (learning C++, C#, Unity/Unreal Engine), build a strong portfolio, and use their job placement system to target major Japanese game companies. My questions for you guys: 1. Is this roadmap realistic, especially choosing SSW Kaigo (Plan A) as a stepping stone to save money for a tech/game vocational school? 2. For breaking into top-tier game companies like Nintendo/Capcom as a programmer, is HAL still the gold standard,

r/movingtojapan · u/EmberAmbassador · 0 points · 0 comments · Housing Edit: It seems to me like the last post was not entirely clear in its wording. I am **not looking for anyone offering themselves as a representative.** This is just about guidance. I am very sorry if it came of that way and if that violated any rules. I tried to be as precise as possible but I seem to have failed. Please excuse the misunderstanding. I am just posting again because I really could use some help. Hey guys, I am planning to move to Japan with my girlfriend early next year and stay for all of 2027. I have found an apartment I really like but the landlord, while being happy to rent to us, only allows for applications via phone and in Japanese. While I am learning the language I am nowhere near that level. He said a **representative that lives in Japan** would be fine. Now I am not entirely sure where to find such a thing. I have found many agencies providing similar services, but most of them only rent from their own properties. The few that seem more flexible that I have contacted so far (among them Minasan and GTN) have not answered within the last 12 days. Now I would be curious if you guys had any tips on agencies (or other services) that could help me out. I am obviously willing to pay for the service and I am explicitly **not** looking for a gurantor, as we will pay the rent for the whole year upfront. In case it matters, the property is in Kyoto. If it helps, the landlord gave me instructions for any would be representative in Japanese. I will post them as well, in case it helps you to understand what I am looking for.

I am an architect currently doing my last year of master and I found an internship in the Meguro neighborhood. To summarize my situation: I have never been to Japan and I have zero knowledge about Tokyo and the country. I started reading, watching videos and gathering as much informations as I can, but I feel like this r/ could be super helpful to hear about your first-hand experiences. I would really like the idea of living in a shared house, either with students/youngers from japan or not, I don't really mind as long as it's a nice environment for making friends. A friend of mine told me that it's definetly possible, but it would be way easier to find a studio apartment and live alone, so I guess i would also take that into consideration if I don't find a student shared house. For this reason, I would appreciate to hear which places are the best to look for these accomodations. Which experiences have you had? About which area I would live in, I'm really open for suggestions. As I said i don't know much about the city. I just know I would love to not be too far from work so that I can move with a bycicle. I would also love to use my weekends to travel outside of Tokyo, sometimes with trains and other time with plane if a place is too far. I would like to know which places you feel are 100% to be seen, how much time you would spend there and if it's possible to enjoy them in a weekend. I am eager to hear about whatever suggestions you might have, weather it's about how and where to find an accomodation, what applications i need to download, which resturant are a must-go, what nice events i can't miss, whats the best way to make connections and what other part

Since I know quite a few people here have worked winter seasons in Japan, I was wondering if anyone has also worked a summer season in mountain resorts like Hakuba, Niseko, or elsewhere. If so, how was your experience? Would you recommend it? I'm particularly worried about the social side of things. Are these places still lively during summer, with international seasonal workers around, or do they turn into ghost towns once the ski season ends? Also, are there actually many paid seasonal jobs available during summer, with decent working hours? Sorry if this isn't quite the right subreddit, but I figured some winter workers might have experience with summer seasons too! Cheers!

At that point we can either return home to the US, or I could apply for a HSP visa (I estimate I can get 85 points or so at that time) and work in Japan. Our thinking is that in worst case scenario this could serve as a 1-2 year intensive language study sabbatical to gain some worldly experience. Has anyone done this before? I went to Japan and obtained a visa to live with him, but after some time, I returned to Brazil to finish my studies. My visa is NOT illegal. We handled all the documentation correctly, and I obtained a residence visa. Just because I have a visa, it doesn’t mean I’m obligated to stay in Japan; I got the visa, spent some time in Japan, and then returned to Brazil—but that doesn’t make what I did illegal. Everything was done in accordance with the law, and I am not doing anything wrong! Now for the actual post, with my questions: I am 18 years old and a yonsei. My father lives in Japan, but I intend to stay far away from him, as we don’t get along very well. My current plan is to move to Osaka, enroll in a Japanese language school (since I only know the absolute basics), and try to find a arubaito while studying animation on my own—which is the career path I want to pursue. If I need help, I have several acquaintances there, aside from my father. Do you think this is a worthwhile endeavor? The main dilemma is that if I don’t go to Japan and instead enroll in a university program (in animation, if possible) here in Brazil, I wouldn’t be able to simply renew my Japanese visa. It expires in May—right in the middle of the academic year—so I would lose it. If I wanted to go to Japan in the future, I would have to pass a Japanese proficiency exam. Furthermore, I’m not sure if it’s worth spending years on a university degree when, in this field, what truly matters is your portfolio, not your formal education.

I’ve also traveled to Tokyo for work several times, my wife and I traveled several years ago for a few weeks for holiday. I’ve been asked to take a 1 year assignment with my family in Tokyo for work. I have a feeling 1 year will turn to two, most of the companies assignments last several years. The company covers our living expenses, travel, visa, tax situation, yada yada. What I’m most concerned about is our 1 year old son and my wife, who is a SAHM. We live minutes from both of our families, who give us a lot of support with the baby. We’re also used to living in the “country” with lots of open space and a large home. I’ve been researching relentlessly for weeks, watching videos, reading blogs, trawling Reddit, searching for daycares and apartments, just trying to get the full idea. Is it going to be too much for us? Will we be able to make friends with other parents? How about finding part time daycare? We have been planning to send him for 2 days a week mostly for socialization, so I’m concerned about being able to do that while living in Tokyo.

From what I understand this education is not officially recognized in either the US and Japan? Please correct me if i'm wrong. I have also been working as a video editor, graphic designer and illustrator for almost 2 years now. So what I'm wondering is if my education and professional experience would have any value there.

r/movingtojapan · u/Seodlyns · 1 points · 1 comments · General Hi, I’m 23 years old, and I went to Japan. It’s been about 3–4 days since I came back to my hometown, after spending two weeks there. And honestly, I never felt “at home” somewhere the way I did in Japan. I’m from a pretty complicated country. It can be hard, and sometimes you feel like you don’t really have the freedom or opportunities to do what you want. I’m studying/working in 2D and 3D animation, with a specialization in character design, environment concept art, and related fields. I’ve always wanted to move to Japan, but this trip made me realize how much I genuinely want it. It wasn’t just a vacation feeling. I felt like all my curiosity, ambition, and motivation suddenly came alive there in a way I hadn’t experienced during my other travels or even in my hometown. I’m learning Japanese right now I’ve only just started and I’m seriously thinking about trying to build a future there. So I wanted to ask: for those of you who moved abroad, especially if you moved when you were young, what advice would you give to a 23 year-old woman who just wants to discover the world, be curious, create things, and build a life somewhere that feels right for her? I’d especially love to hear from people who moved to Japan, but I’d also love to hear from anyone who left their home country and started over somewhere else. ps: I don’t need a “it’s just a vacation feeling” or any type of sentence like that. Please take this post as it is. thankyu <3

My long-term goal is to live and work in Japan, ideally in IT, so I’m trying to figure out what path would make the most sense for me. Right now, I’m considering two options: Option 1: After finishing 12th, I would go to Japan for a Japanese language school, get my Japanese up to around N2/N1, and then attend a Senmon Gakko, probably in IT/programming. After graduating, I’d look for an IT job in Japan. Option 2: I would do a university degree in my home country related to IT/CS, study Japanese alongside university and aim for N2, then after graduating apply to Japanese companies from India and move to Japan if I get a job offer. I’m honestly pretty confused about which route would be better. For people who have experience with this, how different are these two paths when it comes to actually finding an IT job in Japan? Would graduating from a Japanese Senmon Gakko give me a significant advantage when job hunting compared with having an university degree fromyour Home country? Or would it make more sense financially and career-wise to do university in your country, learn Japanese on the side, and then apply for jobs in Japan? I’m also wondering how useful language school is beyond learning Japanese. Does studying in Japan and already being there make the job search considerably easier? I know I still have quite a bit of time before I have to make this decision, but I’d rather understand the options now instead of making a huge decision without knowing what I’m getting into. I’d especially appreciate advice from people who have taken either route or are currently working in IT in Japan. Thanks!

I plan to also get a TEFL, I approx think this will take me 3 years from now to do since my diploma is fast tracked and my degree is self paced and I researched ways to make it faster and cheaper for me. I’m also Canadian so I have working holiday for two years if I wanna go sooner, so here’s my bullet point questions •what’s it like bringing a small dog to Japan? I know it’s a 7 month process with so many vaccines and tests but I’m ready to do that, and he must go in cabin because he’s a shihtzu but he’s small enough (11lbs) to do so. And I’m not so worried since he’s pretty tolerant to things and changes. Also what’s it like getting housing outside big cities? I’m thinking a countryside near a city, and I’m thinking of renting a small house (in the country side so not as expensive) instead of an apartment. Does anyone know any services that help foreigners rent pet friendly houses? •if someone has a degree in English and a diploma in early childhood education, would they be able to get a different job than just a normal Eikaiwa? I don’t mind working at a eikaiwa but I’d rather teach young children than adults. I’m also studying Japanese but I’m very interested in English teaching since I’d like to use my ECE diploma. r/movingtojapan · u/921abc · 1 points · 1 comments · Education I’ve seen schools that doesn’t ask for it if you can prove the 150 (or more) hours of study and university degree. I have both but still the school I’m applying to asks for it. Anyone has done it? What questions do they ask? For context I studied 6 months a while ago but I don’t remember anything. Actually in case I get accepted I want to star from their most basic course. I’m applying to Yoshida so it would be nice to hear other people experiences, they told me the interview lasts 30 minutes and it’s conducted only in Japanese, with an oral and written parts. Thanks in advance!

I am self-employed in Europe as a consultant/cfo, and won’t have a real problem continuing this from Japan. Is anybody in the same boat, being self-employed/working internationally on a spouse visa? Would love to hear some experiences, tips, things to take into consideration, …

I'm just wondering, if most Japanese people are working university jobs, is there a need for construction workers? And if so, could that be a valid path of moving to Japan or other labor work?

r/movingtojapan · u/pokethebee · 1 points · 1 comments · General I am aware that this question has been asked many times before, but I can't find an answer to my specific situation. I have Austrian citizenship and found out last year that I am also registered in the 戸籍謄本. I got in contact with the Japanese Embassy and was told that, from their side, there are no issues with me obtaining the Japanese passport. HOWEVER, I studied abroad in 2024-2025, so I entered and resided in Japan using my Austrian passport and received a Residence Card. Due to my fixed temporary stay as a foreign student, I also received an exemption from National Pension contributions. I want to make clear that I filled out ALL information regarding my nationality honestly. At the time of my study abroad application, as well as when I received pension exemptions, I was unaware that I was actually registered in the koseki. Would my previous residence status as a foreign national cause any issues when entering Japan with a Japanese passport, or if I were to reside in Japan in the future? I understand that this is a very specific issue, but I don't know which department or authority to address these questions to. If anyone has any experience or knows anything, I would be extremely grateful for any guidance.

r/movingtojapan · u/22Toble · 1 points · 1 comments · General I'm an Australian finishing high school this year and plan on visiting Japan for a holiday with a few friends in March, then after that seriously considering getting a working holiday visa to stay longer and potentially trying to stay long term if I enjoy the country. One of the reason I have been particularly interested of the idea of living in Japan is the current cost of living in Australia. Housing prices for rent and bills have continued to rise and I just don't know how I would be able to afford living when I eventually to move out for uni study or work. I understand that Japan does still have financial challenges in the form of lower wages some I'm not assuming its simply cheaper but the lower cost of living is appealing. I am genuinely interested in the country itself and will definitely start learning the language soon in preparation for my trip in March, and use that trip to figure out whether the people and culture is something I can see myself being around. For the working holiday I just wanted to know what kinds of jobs people were able to find and how much they had to work, as I'm aware that the visa does have strict rules around that. For anyone who has done a working holiday visa and ended up staying longer what was your experience like and what made you want to stay. I would especially like to here from some Australians Any general advice about working, living costs, learning Japanese or eventually transitioning into studying or working in Japan would be appreciated. I’m mainly trying to figure out whether Japan could realistically be somewhere I’d want to build a life, rather than simply somewhere I visit.
