PRESSVatican NewsPope at Angelus: 'I have truly felt your support' ↗
18 Oct, 19:27 JST
At the Angelus, Pope Leo said, 'I have truly felt your support,' in words addressed to the faithful.
Editor’s take
Saying 'I have truly felt your support' puts the bond with the faithful ahead of doctrine or institutional authority. If the remark leads to no concrete decision or relief, it remains shared comfort. Encouragement is less a lighthouse than an umbrella offered by the person in the next seat.

PRESSRedditUS undergrad asks how to find work in Japan after graduation ↗
18 Oct, 18:37 JST
A US chemistry undergraduate who spent a year at Waseda wants to return to Tokyo and work there for a year or two after graduating in the spring, and asks about options beyond teaching English.
Editor’s take
Missing the convenience of a city can pull longer and harder than a career plan. A workable answer here most likely turns on the degree and language conditions employers set, not on how much the person loved Tokyo. A year abroad works like a ruler kept from that time, quietly re-measuring ordinary life back home.

Hi yall, I wanted to ask anyone who was also in the same position as me. I am currently an undergraduate student in the US getting my degree in Chem with a near focus in premed. Last year I was given the opportunity to study abroad at Waseda for a year and it was overall a life changing experience and ever since I've been back I have been near miserable. I love the US don't get me wrong, but in terms of convenience, I love Tokyo. I do want to work for a year and two after I graduate in the spring but I'm not sure how. I know teaching English is the standard but I want to know if there are other options. I've worked in the arts before in administion and research but I've also worked in food so I'm not sure what else I can do in Japan in terms of work. My Japanese is also conversational but it has gotten rougher since I've landed back but I also do speak Spanish fluently. I do plan on improving my Japanese but we'll see how that goes since I'm terribly busy trying to catch up on all of my degree requirements I missed while abroad. If working as an English teacher is the only way then I guess I'll do that. Please let me know if anyone has taken a different route or any tips I'm at a lost.

18 Oct, 10:55 JST
Theologian Morimoto, speaking at the Japan National Press Club, analyzed the US at its 250th anniversary and argued it has lost the habit of criticizing itself, moving from exceptionalism to an ordinary power.
Editor’s take
The claim that a country has lost its tradition of self-criticism is sharp as a rereading of founding history, but it becomes testable only if critical speech inside that country actually declines. A nation that discards its own instruments of doubt hears outside criticism only as hostility. A household that smashes its mirror cannot see the dust on its windows.

Hi everyone! I’ll be arriving in Japan on December 1st, 2026, on a Working Holiday Visa and am planning to live and work in either Tokyo or Yokohama, depending on accommodation and job opportunities. I’m wondering how difficult it is to find a part-time job without an official JLPT certificate. I’ve studied Japanese at university and completed Genki I and II, as well as Minna no Nihongo. I’ve also started studying Tobira: Gateway to Advanced Japanese. I’d estimate my Japanese level to be somewhere around N4–N3, although I haven’t taken the official JLPT. I’m still working on improving my speaking and listening skills, especially in everyday conversations. I have previous experience working in retail such as sales of either clothing or electronics, as a barista, and in a bakery. Mostly my workplaces have been at an airport, so I’m quite familiar with customer service and working in busy environments. Ideally, I’d love to find something in retail, a café, bakery, restaurant, or hotel, but I’m also open to cleaning and other part-time opportunities. And other positions that accept working holidaymakers. A conbini would also be fine. I’d love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation! How difficult was it to find a part-time job in Tokyo or Yokohama without JLPT certification? Do Japanese employers care more about actual communication skills than JLPT certificates? Are there more opportunities for working holidaymakers in Tokyo compared to Yokohama? What kinds of jobs would you recommend for someone at my Japanese level? Would you recommend applying before arriving in Japan or waiting until I’m there? Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! 😊

PRESSRedditMinimising move out restoration costs (with a peculiar landlord)? ↗
17 Oct, 16:33 JST
A Tokyo renter who moved out in August was asked to pay ¥250,000 for full restoration after the landlord replaced wallpaper, flooring, and the closet interior.
Editor’s take
Restoration costs should be settled by law and contract, but an elderly landlord demanding full payment unilaterally shows an information gap. When responsibility stays vague, trust erodes with each move-out. It is like a shared kitchen with no agreed dishwasher, so the last user cleans everything.

Tokyo resident. I moved out of an apartment at the end of August, and just now I just got a phone call from my former landlord to say he has finished restoring the apartment and wants me to pay the whole fee (about 25万). After 7 years there I had left some tears and small marks on the wallpaper, and maybe a scratch on the floor (might have been there already though), but otherwise in pretty good condition. However, he seems to have revamped the whole thing: new wallpaper, floor, even the inside of the closet. I brought up the ‘useful life’ (耐用年数) of these items and how to some extent these are no longer the tenant’s responsibility and there’s a way to calculate that, but he had no idea what I was talking about. He’s a very old guy who is losing his mind a little - it sounds like he just called someone to fix up the apartment, didn’t really make a record of anything, and now the bill has arrived he wants me to pay it. He says he will hand me that bill, but I’m not sure where to go from there. It’s kind of difficult to start negotiating with someone who doesn’t even realise negotiating is an option. Any advice?

CBC News reports an accountant testified that bank records for the man dubbed the 'Crypto King' show nearly half of $36.3M from investors funded his own spending.
Editor’s take
What happened to the money is answered by a bank statement, not by a pitch. Cutting support to end a war sooner is like thinning the water on a fire to calm the flames; the fire, not the intention, decides the outcome. If the number of believers grows while the number of those who serve them does not keep pace, the institution thins out from the inside. It is a crowded train with one more conductor; if the trend holds, the world's churches settle into a shape where more people pray and no more people preside.

PRESSVatican NewsPope tells FAO that guaranteeing access to food is a basic human right ↗
16 Oct, 18:05 JST
The pope used an appearance at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization to call food access a basic human right rather than a matter of charity.
Editor’s take
Framing hunger as a human right shifts allocation from charity to obligation. It is like renaming a plate passed at the table as a share that is owed rather than a favor. If the phrase never surfaces in national contribution figures or policy documents, the rights framing stayed ceremonial.

16 Oct, 17:33 JST
A tanker caught fire after a drone attack off Romania's coast, and seven crew members are unaccounted for, according to the BBC.
Editor’s take
Shipping threads through the margins of other people's wars; water arrives from the tap and nobody questions the pipes. What this episode suggests is that commercial vessels with no part in the fight are increasingly the first to burn. The cost reaches ordinary homes as insurance premiums and rerouted cargo, not as headlines.

Read the sourceIran said to sell oil to Russia at 35–42% discount via new Caspian route ↗
16 Oct, 16:08 JST
A social media post says Iran sells crude to Russia at a 35–42% discount, with a new Caspian route used to evade sanctions; it links to an Iran-focused news site.
Editor’s take
Sanctions change the route, not the trade, as long as a seller and a buyer both profit from the detour. Crude under embargo behaves like water under dry ground: it finds the seam and keeps moving. The wider the discount, the more the seller is buying time with price while the buyer quietly builds stock.

PRESSDW WorldStarlink's geopolitical influence grows as Ukraine reveals risks of dependence ↗
16 Oct, 14:51 JST
Starlink was designed to bring internet to remote regions, but it is now vital in crisis and war zones. Ukraine also shows the risks of depending on the service.
Editor’s take
A single private company holding wartime communications can constrain national sovereignty. If Starlink suspends service, the dependent state's military and civilian communications may be cut off. It is like handing a national power grid's switch to a foreign company; convenience brings vulnerability.

PRESSライブドア 国内Japan quake alert briefly showed magnitude 9.9 before being cancelled ↗
16 Oct, 13:32 JST
On the 16th, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued an emergency earthquake warning and later cancelled it; the system briefly computed and displayed a magnitude of 9.9. That figure corresponds to roughly 22 times the energy of the magnitude 9.0 Great East Japan Earthquake.
Editor’s take
A quake alert is like a smoke detector: it saves you only as long as you trust it enough not to pull the battery. Retracting the message does not undo the moment of doubt it created, and the credibility spent here behaves like stock drawn down. If similar miscalculations surface again, users will move toward switching the alerts off.

16 Oct, 09:00 JST
On 2026-10-16, OFAC announced an amended Venezuela-related general license and the issuance of a FAQ.
Editor’s take
Sanctions that squeeze a national economy look like distant political theater, yet they touch the bread on the table and the fees on a remittance. PRESSCointelegraphAustralia releases draft bill to adopt OECD crypto tax reporting framework ↗
16 Oct, 08:34 JST
Australia has published draft legislation that would bring the OECD framework for reporting crypto assets for tax purposes into domestic law.
Editor’s take
A common reporting framework is a window states build into personal wealth, and it marks the end of the story that crypto sits outside the state. Cross-border trades drawing cross-border reporting duties is consistent, yet it also creates an asymmetry: the cost of a filing mistake depends on how fast an exchange responds. Once the draft becomes law, trades the tax office cannot see stop being exceptions and start being omissions.

PRESSCointelegraphScammer loses $4.8M held on tampered Ledgers: Asia Express ↗
16 Oct, 07:42 JST
A scammer reportedly lost about $4.8 million in crypto that had been stored on tampered hardware wallets, a case covered in the Asia Express roundup.
Editor’s take
Someone who made a living by deceiving others being undone by the same kind of trick is an ironic proof that fraud is a business built on trust. Keeping your own keys is not about how strong the safe is but about whose hand holds the key. If tampered devices entered through the supply chain, no amount of individual caution could have prevented this, and the fix shifts to verifying where hardware comes from.

Israel has halted commercial shipments into Gaza, cutting off a key source of supplies that include fruit and winter clothing. Hamas denies tax claims.
Editor’s take
Halting commercial goods removes fruit and winter clothing from market shelves away from the front line, touching daily life. Stopping supplies is also a way to cut the web of ordinary life without firing a shell. If the halt continues, shortages will likely deepen.

Catholic bishops and leaders of the National Association of Evangelicals drew on the Bible and the Declaration of Independence to argue for immigration reform.
Editor’s take
Putting Scripture and the Declaration of Independence in one document is itself a technique for a fractured era. When separate instruments play the same melody, listeners finally remember the tune. PRESSCointelegraphBinance.US seeks $1B valuation in potential $100M funding round: report ↗
16 Oct, 05:21 JST
A report says Binance.US is seeking a $1B valuation in a potential $100M funding round.
Editor’s take
A valuation like this reflects investor expectations more than resolved regulatory risk, because capital does not by itself restore trust in an exchange. Even if the round closes, it does not guarantee the platform's ability to keep operating in the US. It is like repainting a water-damaged house: the surface changes, but the structural weakness remains.

Hi everyone! I’m a foreigner living in Japan, and I’m interested in starting an online side hustle selling digital products (made with the help of AI) on platforms like Etsy and Gumroad. Are there other foreigners in Japan who sell digital products online? If so, how do you handle Japan’s regulations and taxes for an online business? In particular, I’m wondering about: * Whether you need to register anything (e.g., a business start-up notification) and how your visa status affects side income * How you report and pay taxes on income from overseas platforms * Any other policies or pitfalls I should know about I’m excited to get started, but I’m concerned about getting the legal side right. Any advice or personal experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

15 Oct, 19:30 JST
In a market largely cut off from Western hardware by sanctions, homegrown Arm, RISC-V and Elbrus designs were put on display. At the ME26 forum in Sochi, retro games served as the demo, shown as consoles and "gaming" PCs.
Editor’s take
When foreign parts stop arriving, the yardstick for a chip shifts from raw performance to whether it can run at all. Retro games made a cheap, legible demonstration. It is like emergency rations handed out at a shelter: chosen because they can be distributed, not because they taste good — what appears on screen reflects a broken supply chain rather than a mature processor.

- Geopolitics and sanctions have mostly cut off the Russian public from Western hardware — at least officially. In recent ages, the country's homegrown chip designs are Arm, RISC-V, and Elbrus architectures. A handful of interesting designs were on display at the Microelectronics 26 (ME26) forum in Sochi, using retro gaming as a demonstration point. A couple of years back, the government even issued an order to create a high-end gaming console, albeit with relatively little success. The result of that initiative didn't appear to be on display at the event.
