Honor reveals which global devices get MagicOS 11 ↗

17 Oct, 09:01 JST

Honor unveiled Android 17-based MagicOS 11 last month, and its UK account posted a list of supported devices on X on October 15, saying the stable update will roll out between this month and March next year. The timing details reportedly remain unclear.

Editor’s take

A device list is like a ticket for a long-distance train with no timetable: the destination is printed, but arrival is anyone's guess. Appearing on the list and actually getting a better experience are separate matters. The gap between them is usually filled by word of mouth after the rollout.

Tesla Roadster Rocket is an invite-only car not approved for public roads ↗

17 Oct, 05:16 JST

Tesla's new Roadster flips in the air, jumps a row of Teslas, and lands on SpaceX thrusters. The Rocket version is invite-only, not approved for public roads, and not due until 2028.

Editor’s take

This limited car is less a real means of transport than a symbol whose allure grows because it cannot be owned. It is like staring at a reserved table in an expensive restaurant. Because it is talked about without ever driving on public roads, its buzz is consumed before its function. In that sense, it sells a fantasy of possession, not a dream of movement.

Google Translate's sweeping redesign starts rolling out ↗

16 Oct, 20:14 JST

A new look is reaching the Android translation app, but it is unclear whether the translation itself changed or only the layout and navigation.

Editor’s take

Repainting the front door can feel like moving house even when nothing behind it has moved. If the translations themselves are unchanged, the daily usefulness of this update is unchanged too. If complaints months from now land on the wording of translations rather than the new screens, the redesign will not have been a substantive improvement.

16 Oct, 20:05 JST

Sony has announced a gold-plated portable music player priced at $5,900 that does not ship with the newest version of Android.

Editor’s take

TSMC to add another 3nm fab in Tainan, targeting production in H1 2028 ↗

15 Oct, 18:40 JST

TSMC says it plans to build an additional 3nm chip factory in Tainan, Taiwan, with production targeted for the first half of 2028. The company already holds 3nm capacity in Arizona and in Kumamoto, Japan.

Editor’s take

If the expansion proceeds as announced, leading-edge chipmaking stops being a single-region story and becomes a multi-site one — the flip side of how hard it has become to park power-hungry plants in one place. Like water poured into one cup, demand keeps looking for a second vessel. A checkable claim follows: if the new line slips, the dispersal reading collapses.

NVIDIA GPU Prices Surge in Japan, Raising Black Friday Doubts ↗

A Reddit post says Nvidia's RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB rose up to 144% in Japan to $1,292, while the RTX 5080 climbed past $2,400. It asks if Black Friday will happen.

Editor’s take

Figma announced features defining how AI agents work on its platform, led by Figma Specs, a Markdown editor for describing a design language.

Editor’s take

Writing a design language into machine-readable form turns personal taste into a shared team asset. Once rules are documented, decisions wobble less when the people change. A leak says Oppo's Reno17 series could arrive in China next month with two screen sizes, a 200MP rear camera and the AI button carried over from the Reno16 line.

Editor’s take

Netflix plans to cut about 1,000 staff, 6% of employees, its largest reduction since 2022 ↗

15 Oct, 15:10 JST

Netflix is planning layoffs of around 1,000 people, the largest cut since 2022, with product, engineering, legal and HR teams expected to be heavily affected.

Editor’s take

That the cuts reach product, engineering, legal and HR at once suggests a redesign of the organisation itself, not just a trimming of costs. People are not a line in a cost table; they are accumulated judgement. If the reduction keeps being explained only as short-term margin improvement, the projects that would have come next quietly disappear. IDC says global smartphone shipments fell 22.0% year over year to 255.3 million units in Q3, a record quarterly decline. Samsung and Apple gained share while Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo fell more deeply, with Apple and Samsung helped by a strong premium portfolio.

Editor’s take

The more people postpone replacing a handset, the less the shrinking market looks temporary and the more it settles in as structure. US appeals court lets Florida enforce law banning social media accounts for under-14s ↗

15 Oct, 09:25 JST

A federal appeals court allowed Florida to enforce a state law barring children under 14 from accessing social media platforms, rejecting tech groups' claim that it violates free speech rights.

Editor’s take

A blanket ban justified by protection creates a new checkpoint — proving one's age — and that checkpoint can itself become a pretext for collecting children's data. It is like closing the door while handing the key to the doorkeeper. The real fork is whether any mechanism survives to check, later, whether the ban actually reduced how much time children spend on these platforms.

RTX 5090, once a consumer gaming card, now on smugglers' menu alongside cigarettes ↗

The RTX 5090, once a consumer gaming card, is reported to appear on smugglers' menus alongside cigarettes.

Editor’s take

Compute turning up on the same shelf as cigarettes and other contraband is a sign that it has moved from a hobbyist's toy to fuel for the wider economy. Anything that misses the official shelves pushes buyers toward other channels. A report argues that the hinge cooling in the device described as the iPhone Duo is the breakthrough Android foldables have lacked, and an accompanying image shows hands-on use with Netflix on the inner display.

Russian chipmakers show homegrown Arm and RISC-V silicon via retro games ↗

15 Oct, 19:30 JST

In a market largely cut off from Western hardware by sanctions, homegrown Arm, RISC-V and Elbrus designs were put on display. At the ME26 forum in Sochi, retro games served as the demo, shown as consoles and "gaming" PCs.

Editor’s take

When foreign parts stop arriving, the yardstick for a chip shifts from raw performance to whether it can run at all. Retro games made a cheap, legible demonstration. It is like emergency rations handed out at a shelter: chosen because they can be distributed, not because they taste good — what appears on screen reflects a broken supply chain rather than a mature processor.

Geopolitics and sanctions have mostly cut off the Russian public from Western hardware — at least officially. In recent ages, the country's homegrown chip designs are Arm, RISC-V, and Elbrus architectures. A handful of interesting designs were on display at the Microelectronics 26 (ME26) forum in Sochi, using retro gaming as a demonstration point. A couple of years back, the government even issued an order to create a high-end gaming console, albeit with relatively little success. ASML lithography machines nearly sold out through 2028 as some customers eye 2030 ↗

Samsung rolls out One UI 9 stable to Galaxy S23 series, Fold5 and Flip5 ↗

15 Oct, 09:32 JST

Samsung began the Android 17-based One UI 9 stable rollout for the Galaxy S23 trio, Z Fold5 and Z Flip5, starting with beta users in South Korea.

Editor’s take

Reaching testers first is like seating regulars before unlocking the door, so an update never arrives at the same moment for everyone. Because package size and timing differ by enrolment, early bug reports reach other users long before the software does.

Apple researchers turn idle Macs into a virtual GPU cloud called Minions ↗

14 Oct, 20:15 JST

Apple researchers describe Minions, a virtual GPU cloud pooling idle Macs for AI inference; stalled jobs go to networked Macs and waits fall to minutes.

Editor’s take

Pooling unused compute pushes AI speed to depend more on network design than on the size of a facility. If this approach spreads, compute waits shift from a budget problem to an operations problem, and data boundaries between teams become the next bottleneck. It is like gathering empty rooms into a giant library.

Apple internally uses a system known as “Minions,” a “virtual GPU cloud” made up of idle Macs, to help manage workloads, as described in a recent arXiv paper published by its researchers. The system helps take stalled AI jobs, some that once had 10-plus-hour company GPU queues, and distributes them to Macs on the network, with resulting wait times down to as little as minutes. A request from a user on the company’s Slack can get the ball rolling, although the researchers observed a common concern about teams’ data running on devices outside their group. The paper, also shared on Apple’s Machine Learning Research site, describes the system as having a “Minion Server,” a “Minion Executor,” and a “Minion Watchdog.” The system relies specifically on Apple Silicon for AI inference, the only type of work it does. There are two kinds of jobs: embeddings with open-source Hugging Face transformer models, and text generation from large language models through Ollama, which is installed on each participating Mac.The Minion Server works by splitting submitted tasks into subtasks, stored in a PostgreSQL database. Then, on each Mac, a Minion Executor is run to pull the next subtask over REST APIs; there is no central scheduler in this “pull-based execution model.” The Mac reads inputs from Amazon S3, grabs the model if needed, runs the subtask on its own GPU, then returns the result to S3.(Image credit: Apple (AI-generated))Failures are caught by the Minion Watchdog, which tracks the heartbeats that Macs running work send every five minutes. Unfinished subtasks end up back in the queue wh

First Oppo Find X10 Pro Max and Find X10 camera samples revealed ↗

14 Oct, 17:36 JST

Oppo has shared camera samples from the Find X10 Pro Max and Find X10. Early impressions highlight a refined shooting experience, snappy interface, instant lens switching, and zippy photos, though the removal of some feature is noted.

Editor’s take

Refined shooting feel suggests the competition is shifting from spec sheets to everyday usability. It is like a tool that becomes an extension of the hand, changing how one sees the scene. Yet the removal of something, even if unspecified, hints that convenience may come with quiet trade-offs.

The first phone with three 200MP cameras: resolution isn't the headline ↗

14 Oct, 17:00 JST

Android Authority tested the first phone to carry three 200MP cameras, and its verdict is that resolution is not the part that stands out most.

Editor’s take

Camera megapixels are the horsepower race of phones: the number runs ahead of the experience. What decides a photograph is how much computation happens after the shutter closes, which makes this device less a camera than a small computer that happens to have lenses. Once the numbers stop moving the needle, the reason to upgrade moves off the spec sheet and into your own shooting habits.

Attack raised supermarket fridges across France to 50°C; Claroty reports details ↗

14 Oct, 15:00 JST

A cyberattack raised the set temperature of supermarket refrigerators across France to 50°C. Claroty's Team82 reported details of the incident, which reportedly exploited passwords auto-updated daily to the current date.

Editor’s take

A design that lets refrigerators be controlled en masse from afar quietly threatens food safety more than weather or blackouts. If this attack caused real harm, the damage should show up as regional food waste before it shows up as store losses. Temperature control is like a hidden tap at the back of a shop.

FBI reveals North Korean remote IT worker scam that steals US identities for jobs, dismantles 40+ laptop farm in Texas ↗

14 Oct, 14:20 JST

The FBI released a video on how North Korean remote IT workers steal US identities, get hired, and send large income to the regime. Over 40 laptop farms in Texas were dismantled.

Editor’s take

The tactic of stealing an identity to work exposes how much employment rests on trust. In hiring, the real question is the system that confirms who the person is, not the résumé. In daily life, it is like asking for ID when receiving a package: the friction is the price of safety.

German police probe robot owner and companion over sexual contact with girl ↗

In Germany a humanoid robot was seen touching a girl's buttocks and thrusting its hips, and the footage was streamed on social media. Police are investigating the 16-year-old owner and a 19-year-old companion on suspicion of sexual insult.

Editor’s take

When a machine touches a person's body, responsibility travels back not to the machine but to the people who chose the movement and pressed the button to stream it. It is the same shape as a knife: the blade does not wound, the arm swinging it does. Rakuten Mobile phones ship with AOSP test keys in Android Verified Boot ↗

14 Oct, 12:00 JST

JVN reports that several smartphones offered by Rakuten Mobile use AOSP test keys for the Android Verified Boot feature.

Editor’s take

A lock that anyone can copy is not a lock, it is a ritual. Boot verification is meant to be the moment a phone proves it is still itself, and test keys turn that proof into a formality. Unless a firmware update swaps the keys out, these handsets will keep shipping with a verification step that cannot tell an untouched system from a modified one.

A YouTuber built his own plate-reading camera to track police cars; officers came to his home ↗

13 Oct, 21:00 JST

In the U.S., Flock Safety's automated license plate recognition cameras are drawing criticism as a privacy threat. A YouTuber who built a similar camera and tracked police cars reported that officers then visited his home.

Editor’s take

What shapes power is less the surveillance device than who is allowed to own the same device. If off-the-shelf parts let an individual assemble the same kind of network, rules aimed only at the installers accomplish little. A camera is like a pane of glass that separates the one looking through from the one being looked at — adding panes does not make the two sides equal.

Apple hits record 22% share as smartphone market shrinks ↗

13 Oct, 19:32 JST

Apple took a record 22% of third-quarter 2026 smartphone shipments, just behind Samsung's 23%, as industry shipments fell 20% to the lowest level since 2012.

Editor’s take

A record share in a shrinking market is closer to a record of survival than proof of strength. It is a bit like the one shop on a quiet street whose queue merely got shorter. The gap at the top is thin enough that the next ranking can flip on a single launch plan.

Apple's share of worldwide smartphone shipments rose to a third-quarter record of 22% in the third quarter of 2026, despite a decline in its own iPhone shipments, according to preliminary figures from Counterpoint Research. Apple finished the quarter just behind Samsung, which accounted for 23% of shipments. Across the industry, manufacturers shipped 20% fewer smartphones than a year earlier, taking the July-to-September total to its lowest level since 2012. Apple's launch plan was a significant factor in its lower shipment volume this year. With no standard iPhone 18 arriving alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models in September, Counterpoint said Apple supplied fewer new devices to retail channels than during last year's iPhone 17 lineup launch. The research firm nevertheless reported a better debut for the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ models than for the previous Pro generation, with sales in China and India standing out. Demand for the ‌iPhone 17‌ also continued to support shipments. Apple also outperformed the wider market in China. Separate IDC figures reported by Reuters put Apple's shipment decline at 4.3%, compared with a 15.4% contraction for the country as a whole. China's total of 57.9 million units marked its sixth consecutive quarter of annual declines. Apple took second place in China with a 17.8% share, behind Huawei at 21%. IDC said Apple's newly released iPhones exceeded sales expectations, although the smaller selection of new models reduced its overall shipments. Counterpoint linked the global downturn to shortages and rising prices for memory chips, which have made phones

China Q3 smartphone shipments fall 15.4% YoY to 57.9M, sixth straight decline ↗

13 Oct, 17:25 JST

IDC says China's Q3 smartphone shipments fell 15.4% year over year to 57.9 million units, the sixth straight quarterly decline; Huawei led with 21% and Apple had 17.8%.

Editor’s take

When an entire market keeps shrinking, a reshuffling of ranks means competition has shifted from a growth story to a fight over existing customers. It is like arguing over seats in a room that is getting smaller: there can be a winner, but the space does not expand. Whether the leader's strength signals a shift to higher price tiers or longer replacement cycles can be checked against the next shipment figures.

Intel details data-centre D-series GPU: 480 GB, air-cooled ↗

13 Oct, 17:18 JST

At the Open Compute Project summit Intel detailed its D-series data-centre GPU: up to 480 GB LPDDR5X, 1.5 TB/s bandwidth and 1.3 PFLOPS FP8 in a 350 W air-cooled card.

Editor’s take

The more memory gathers onto a single card, the more the answer to where large intelligence should live changes. It is the same logic as a bigger refrigerator meaning fewer trips to the shop. If an ordinary air-cooled card can do this, the places that run large models need not be a handful of vast facilities.

r/stocks · u/ohdonpier · 1 points · 0 comments · Industry News At the Open Compute Project Global Summit on 12 October 2026 Intel released technical details for its data-centre GPU D-series. The card reaches up to 480 GB of LPDDR5X memory, 1.5 TB/s of memory bandwidth and 1.3 PFLOPS of FP8 compute inside a 350 W air-cooled standard PCIe card. Customer sampling is underway. Intel's own branded card carries 160 GB while partner ODM cards reach 480 GB. Intel says it supports models up to 300 billion parameters on a single card and more than 1 trillion parameters across an eight-GPU system. Here's what I think this implies. Intel designed the D-series and is the only vendor sampling it, so whether capacity-bound inference buyers take the card accrues directly to its data-centre accelerator line. NVIDIA is exposed the other way. Intel benchmarks the card against the RTX PRO 6000, the incumbent air-cooled PCIe inference card with a fraction of the memory, so NVIDIA loses capacity-bound serving share if a 350 W card holding a 300-billion-parameter model proves adequate. The earliest test is Intel's third-quarter results on 29 October 2026. The question is whether Intel attaches D-series customer commitments, volume-production or general-availability timing to the sampling it has now confirmed. Separately, the first ODM announcement of a 480 GB D-series card would confirm the high-capacity configuration is actually being built. If published or independently measured serving throughput on long-context, high-concurrency workloads lands far below HBM-based alternatives at the same model size, the capacity advantage will not convert into deployments. Intel has released peak FP8 compute and bandwidth but no throughput figures. Equally, if the 480 GB configuration never ships as an ODM part and the line stays at Intel's 160 GB card, the single-card 300-billion-parameter claim never
