Sakana's AI Scientist v3 automates research with parallel coding agents ↗

16 Oct, 13:16 JST

AI Scientist v3 runs parallel coding agents with shared memory. A dev version co-authored an ALIFE 2026 oral paper; autonomous retrieval rose from 52% to 98%.

Editor’s take

As research automation advances, authorship and accountability become the sticking point. This system can be a powerful colleague while humans steer it, but trust wobbles when automated output must be credited to someone. It is like a kitchen where a person writes the recipe and another turns on the stove: the taste still needs an owner. Until peer review and reproducibility catch up, speed alone will not settle the verdict.

Japan tightens residence rules, dimming appeal of working there and hitting local shops ↗

16 Oct, 12:04 JST

Chugoku Shimbun Digital reports that stricter residence status rules are weakening the appeal of working in Japan, and that the tightening is directly hitting local shops.

Kael wrote about this · 2026-10-19 ↗

Editor’s take

Treating the labor force as a adjustable valve may ease local staffing shortages briefly, but over time the small shops that depend on these people will feel the empty shifts first. If recruitment periods and vacancy rates rise after the tightening, that judgment will be confirmed. It is like raising the eaves: the rain is kept out, but the people inside also start to leave.

Meta Muse Wonder ranks #12 in Agent Arena as cost and limits draw scrutiny ↗

15 Oct, 19:08 JST

Meta Muse Wonder (Max) ranked #12 in Agent Arena. It reportedly led a coding eval, while inference bugs and 3D/spatial limits are noted.

Editor’s take

This model's ranking makes the trade-off between capability and expense explicit. It is like buying a fast car that is cheap to buy but thirsty at the pump: the speed is visible, the bill arrives later. If cost-per-task comparisons keep being published, adoption will shift from benchmark enthusiasm to budget arithmetic.

Meta Muse Wonder: Arena places Muse Wonder (Max) at #12 in Agent Arena with +6.4% net improvement, at $1.13 per task. That is about 2.1x the cost of Muse Spark 1.3, and within 1 point of GPT-5.6 Sol at 25% lower cost (Arena).Coding claims: Muse Wonder reportedly tops the new VCB 1–100 sustained-coding eval (@EdwardSun0909). AA-Robotics v0.1: Frontier LLMs control a 6-axis arm via HTTP and four cameras ↗

15 Oct, 19:08 JST

AA-Robotics v0.1: frontier LLMs control a 6-axis arm via HTTP, four cameras. Top: GPT-6 Astra 69; Sol $1.93/task. Models ~100x slower, ~10x costlier than humans.

Editor’s take

The benchmark shows frontier models are far from human efficiency in physical tasks, despite high scores. Like using a supercomputer to open a jar, the capability exists but at absurd cost and delay. If these gaps persist, deploying such systems outside lab demos will remain economically irrational.

Argon matches Astra on intelligence index at about 60% of task cost ↗

14 Oct, 14:40 JST

Artificial Analysis places Argon level with GPT-6 Astra on its Intelligence Index at about 60% of Astra's cost per task: $1.99 under introductory rates.

Editor’s take

A hallucination number is not a general error rate; models that may decline to answer will always look cleaner on it. Reading it as an overall reliability score is like judging a chef by the dishes he refuses to cook. The comparison that matters is not where a model sits on a chart, but which tasks it will accept without pretending.

El-Sayed’s campaign test: Can he win over Black and Jewish voters? ↗

RNS says El-Sayed’s identity as a Muslim and Arab American matters to Black and Jewish Democratic voters. The question is whether it broadens support.

Apple's iPhone Duo may be thicker and heavier than most Android foldables, but reportedly fits a bigger battery than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold.

Apple to ban disguised 'nudify' apps that pass review ↗

19 Oct, 20:40 JST

Bain Capital, VanEck and Pantera Capital are named design partners, and users can delegate proofs to AI agents. The pitch cites a $40bn AI fraud risk.

Editor’s take

If proving personhood becomes a banking credential, the centre of identity checking shifts from paper to the body and its devices. Ukraine's foreign minister says Russia-China-US meeting will only feed Putin's self-aggrandisement ↗

Ukraine's foreign minister warned that a Russia-China-US meeting will only feed Putin's self-aggrandisement. The meeting's agenda, participants and expected outcome have not been set out.

Editor’s take

A summit can work less as a peace mechanism than as a mirror for a leader's self-image. If the meeting leaves only a photo and no movement on ceasefire terms or monitoring, the warning will have been proved right. 19 Oct, 19:22 JST

France is advancing a stablecoin tax and is weighing proposals aimed at self-custodial wallets and an exit tax on crypto holdings.

Editor’s take

Taxing a self-custodied wallet is not a levy on what someone owns but on how they choose to hold it, which pushes privacy out of the design rather than protecting it. It is like charging a homeowner for the way the furniture is arranged before a move. If this line holds, keeping your own keys becomes a taxable fact in itself.

A bank-issued token on a public chain tilts the balance from decentralisation toward settlement certainty. Editor’s take

Battery life in a foldable is like cash in a wallet: unnoticed while it lasts, and a problem for everything once it runs low. One company's promising figure does not by itself improve the device in hand; that changes only when rivals follow. A spec-sheet line is not a change in daily life.

Post claims a Christian is killed every 86 minutes in Nigeria ↗

A Reddit post claims Christians in Nigeria are killed every 86 minutes on average, with over 60,000 killed since 2012 and about 7,500 in 2025 alone.

Editor’s take

Folding every death into a unified story of religious persecution can galvanize outrage while blurring the complex responsibility structures in local conflicts. Violence is like a wildfire: depending on the wind, the fireline can bypass some villages and swallow those who refuse to take sides. I'm Jewish; it shocked and sickened me, it looked like something out of the Holocaust. It's evil. Since 2012, **60,000+ Christians in Nigeria have been killed**. It has accelerated and \~7,500 were killed in 2025 alone. \~4,000 more already this year. Their crime: Being Christian. Supposedly it's sectarian violence, however imo it appears to be Islamic extremists (Boko Haram and ISWAP) killing anyone Christian, along with any moderate Muslims who refuse to join. Since 2000, 34,000 moderate Muslims have been killed for refusing to join the extremists. How can this be merely "sectarian violence"? Another recent video shows a priest slumped in a freshly dug out grave, crying and looking utterly defeated, as he had apparently buried 7 murdered congregants in one week. From my Jewish perspective: there are \~30,000 Nigerian Jews in the southeast, safe for now by distance (albeit persecuted). *"First they came for the Christians..."* Please everyone, why are we not all more horrified? How is no one protesting or doing anything to push governments, etc to take action? Where is the pope's voice? Why aren't we getting this into the media? I don't know what to do myself, but prayer is not always enough: "faith without works is dead". My synagogue is besties with a church down the road, I shall go ask the priest (vicar? pastor?) what can be done. There must be a way to organize to ring the alarm bell on what is happening.

When a communications network belongs to a private company, its terms can be set outside the battlefield. Verifying people and agents in one framework moves account opening from "who operated this" to "which party is accountable." Zelenskyy is reported to have said the United States appears to be pushing Ukraine toward surrender to Russia. The post links to an article by a Ukrainian news outlet.

Editor’s take

Peace is an easy word to borrow when the party being told to stop fighting is not the one holding the pen. A map offered by a mediator is usually folded along the mediator's own convenience. An agreement pressed from outside can look tidy on paper and still be remembered by whoever the line was drawn through, which is how a deal turns into a longer war.

Trump says he is in the process of negotiating peace between Russia and Ukraine ↗

19 Oct, 05:39 JST

President Trump said he is negotiating peace between Russia and Ukraine, without offering terms.

Editor’s take

Saying talks are under way is not a timetable; it is another way of saying nothing has been settled. A forecast that only reports observing leaves the decision to carry an umbrella with the person walking outside. Who sits at the table and who waits in the hallway weighs more on daily life than any announcement.

White House crypto chief departs: State of Crypto ↗

19 Oct, 03:30 JST

The White House’s crypto chief is leaving, according to the headline of CoinDesk’s State of Crypto. The excerpt provides no reason, timing, or successor.

Editor’s take

When a policy post changes hands, the continuity of rules depends on institutions rather than one person’s presence. It is like a bridge held up by a single pillar: the structure looks fine until the pillar moves. Without a stated reason for the departure, the public cannot judge whether the policy is stable or merely personal.

OnePlus 16 launches in China with 9,000mAh battery, no global version ↗

19 Oct, 03:09 JST

OnePlus 16 is China-only: 9,000mAh battery, 100W/50W charging, 6.78-inch LTPO OLED, Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, and a 200MP/50MP/50MP triple camera.

The OnePlus 16 is official, with a mammoth 9,000mAh battery. The power plant supports 100W wired and 50W wireless charging. Elsewhere on the phone, there's the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 (still can't cope with this name), a 6.78-inch LTPO OLED display that can go up to 185Hz in select games, and a triple camera, consisting of a 200MP wide-angle, a 50MP 3x telephoto, and a 50MP ultrawide. The OnePlus 16 is available in China, and it's exclusive to China. Sadly, it isn't getting a global version. Still, that doesn't matter as much when you sell 70 thousand units in the first...

Gurman: Apple may launch products on four straight Fridays ↗

19 Oct, 03:01 JST

Gurman says Apple may announce devices Oct. 27–28 and release OLED MacBook Pro, M6 MacBook Pro/iMac, and/or iPad mini 8 on Nov. 6.

Editor’s take

A weekly product parade turns a practical upgrade into a seasonal ritual; the calendar starts selling before the specs do. When dates come first, the decision shifts from need to belonging. That is a small but real cost to rational choice, like buying an umbrella because the shop changes its window every Friday.

'Hybrid warfare': Taiwan drives away 16 Chinese ships ↗

19 Oct, 01:25 JST

China is increasing its presence around Taiwan in a pattern Taipei says is meant to 'alter the status quo.' Taiwan drove away 16 Chinese ships.

Editor’s take

If maritime intimidation becomes routine, ships and aircraft pay through insurance and rerouting even without a shot. It is like measuring a neighbor's wall that leans further onto your land each day. This kind of status-quo change erodes options gradually, not through a sudden clash.

Modder brings Nvidia's DLSS feature suite to AMD Radeon GPUs, including Neural Rendering ↗

19 Oct, 01:03 JST

A community project's latest update brings upscaling, frame generation, ray regeneration and neural rendering to Radeon GPUs, a gap in AMD's own lineup.

Editor’s take

Like a footbridge over a walled garden, this shows AI rendering spreading from one vendor's exclusive into a shared base layer. The mod hangs on one maintainer's persistence: if updates and game support keep coming it becomes a durable alternative, and if they stop it reverts to a workaround.

Original source
The DLSS-NR project on AMD by Daniel Blanco was first released on September 3, 2026, bringing DLSS 5 Neural Rendering to Radeon GPUs; in the latest 0.8.0 update, however, it makes all the main DLSS features available, featuring DLSS SR, Frame Generation, Ray Regeneration, and the newest DLSS NR model, along with more performance improvements. While AMD has equivalents for most DLSS features like FSR upscaling, frame generation, ray regeneration, and anti-lag, it’s not as commonly supported by most games compared to Nvidia’s offerings. Even if players could use the AMD equivalent features, Neural Rendering is one that AMD just doesn’t have an equivalent for yet, which is why mods like DLSS-NR on AMD were made.Daniel Blanco wanted to fill the gap with NR in its initial release, but in the latest update, he added all the DLSS features: DLSS Ray Reconstruction, Super Resolution 4.5, Frame Generation, and the latest 310.9.16 improved Neural Rendering build that we covered recently with modders using it on unsupported games. Interestingly, the update notes say it includes FSR 4.1.1 upscaling; AMD GPUs already use FSR, but having FSR 4.1.1 specifically gives the mod a consistent version of FSR to work with, instead of having to be compatible with the various implementations of FSR in different scenarios. The mod currently supports three generations of Radeon GPUs: RX 9000, 7000, and 6000 (RDNA4, 3, and 2, respectively), in any DirectX 12 game that uses FSR, DLSS, or XeSS. You can install the mod by downloading the NeuralHub mod loader, which provides a UI for you to install it into

Always-on AI wearables push wiretap laws to the limit — and put users at risk ↗

18 Oct, 21:21 JST

A CNBC story shared on r/technology warns that always-listening AI wearables are stretching wiretap and privacy law, potentially leaving their users legally exposed.

Editor’s take

Wearing one is like walking around with a recorder in your pocket that never stops taping other people's conversations. The pattern is familiar from earlier technologies: the product ships first, the law catches up later, and the user is left holding the liability. The real danger sits in that gap, not in the gadget itself.

On Oct. 18, 2026, Pope Leo led Sunday prayers in his first major public appearance since lung cancer surgery, according to CNN.

Editor’s take

Ukrainian drone attack on St Petersburg kills 1, hits energy sites ↗

18 Oct, 19:34 JST

A Ukrainian drone attack on Russia's St Petersburg killed one person and damaged energy sites. Zelenskyy said Russian overnight attacks on Ukraine killed two people and accused Moscow of continuing to break an energy ceasefire.

Editor’s take

If a ceasefire breaks with every attack, it is not a step toward peace but a ledger of pauses between strikes. As long as both sides count violations, attacks on energy sites become a tactic that holds civilian infrastructure hostage. It is like leaving a broken tap open and catching water in buckets.

Pixel 11 Pro XL vs. Galaxy S27 Ultra: Why You Shouldn’t Buy Google’s Flagship Right Now ↗

An Android Authority article compares the Pixel 11 Pro XL with the Galaxy S27 Ultra and argues against buying Google’s flagship at this moment. Specific points of comparison and supporting evidence are not provided.

AI debt strains: CoreWeave yield tops 15%, SoftBank cover pricier, Oracle bonds near 80–90¢ ↗

Iran war live: settlers attack EU diplomats, drones target Riyadh, tankers ablaze ↗

18 Oct, 09:00 JST

Live coverage reports masked settlers attacking European politicians in the occupied West Bank, drones heading toward Riyadh, and fires reported on three tankers.

Editor’s take

A diplomatic passport is supposed to make a person untouchable; when it instead marks them as a target, safety on the ground is set by local force rather than status. That is the traffic light nobody obeys, where what decides whether you cross is the cars, not the signal. OpenAI is building a humanoid robot, and says the brain is the hard part ↗

18 Oct, 08:45 JST

OpenAI's Sam Altman wants a humanoid that can operate in a world designed for people, but he says the robot's "brain" is a far bigger challenge.

Editor’s take

Building a machine that fits a world designed for people means making a stand-in rather than redesigning the world. The hard part is not joints or batteries but judgment in a cluttered kitchen — like handing a knife to someone who has never cooked. If this works, the first jobs squeezed may not be assembly lines but the gig work of running errands and lending a hand; hiring ads will tell us sooner than any launch event.

Apple warns against walk-in iPhone Duo purchases on launch day ↗

18 Oct, 06:30 JST

Apple retail staff must warn customers against walk-in iPhone Duo purchases on launch day. No stock is expected without a pre-order; pickup may open Saturday.

Editor’s take

Like chasing a festival float, people head to the store for the excitement before they even see the product. The news of no stock suggests that the experience of showing up may be remembered longer than the failure to buy.

Read the evidence
Who it affects
People who are considering going to an Apple Store on launch day to buy an iPhone Duo without a pre-order.
What remains unknown
The actual stock levels on launch day and whether any walk-in purchases will be possible remain unclear, as does how strictly the warning to staff is enforced.
Original source
Some Apple retail employees have been told to warn customers against visiting to purchase an iPhone Duo without a pre-order on Friday, October 23. Apple Store employees told MacRumors that have been advised that there will likely be no ‌iPhone Duo‌ stock available for walk-in purchases on launch day. Staff have been instructed to discourage customers without pre-orders from coming in expecting to buy the device, warning that they will be disappointed. Apple's online store tells customers to check back on Saturday, October 24 for pickup availability. Pickup reservations were briefly available when pre-orders opened before the option was disabled. The October 24 message does not guarantee stock will be available that day, and it remains unclear how firm the warning shared with employees is and whether it applies worldwide. If the guidance is firm and widely perpetuated, it closes off a potential route for customers hoping to bypass the device's lengthy online wait times, at least at the stores concerned. Warnings about a constrained launch began well before Apple announced the ‌iPhone Duo‌. In early September, Nikkei Asia reported that production had reached only a few hundred devices per day in late August. Further production problems emerged in late September. Earlier this month, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple had at one point believed production constraints could push the start of sales into November. The company subsequently assembled enough inventory to proceed with the October 23 launch, although supply remained very limited. The extent of the shortage became appare
