PRESSReligion News ServiceReligious preschools seek public funding but exemptions from nondiscrimination rules; Supreme Court to decide ↗
16 Oct, 00:59 JST
St. Mary Catholic Parish v. Roy is one of many cases in which religious schools have challenged the wall between church and state. The Supreme Court will decide if that is constitutional.

Taking public money while avoiding nondiscrimination rules risks bypassing public norms. Depending on the ruling, religious institutions could receive public funds while keeping discriminatory hiring or admission standards—like a coat with one public sleeve and private, inconsistency is the point.

JASSO has posted the application documents for its 2027 overseas study grant. Applications go through a Japanese university, though some may apply directly.
Editor’s take
A scheme meant to support the will to study abroad changes character once the gateway sits inside a university: the path becomes an institutional procedure. Whether it works depends less on documents being posted than on staff being able to move. A grant is less a tailwind than a numbered slip.

15 Oct, 19:00 JST
On Thursday, October 15, Christianity Today published an article by biographer Lucy S. R. Austen on Elisabeth Elliot's sexuality, written in response to a piece by historian William Stell published earlier this year in the magazine ARC.
Editor’s take
Arguments about a dead person's sexuality can run ahead of the evidence, with interest doing the work that documents cannot. A biographer who names what cannot be known treats silence as a boundary rather than a gap, which is the honest move. Recording a locked room as locked tells later readers more than forcing the door.

A Reddit post citing a 2019 Business Insider article says the UK Conservative party received money from nine Russia-linked donors named in an intelligence report that was blocked from publication. The post drew one point and no comments.

When an old article link becomes the circulating proof, a society's memory looks like a room decorated with a single framed clipping. A traditional bank putting crypto assets on a professional-investor counter is like a supermarket moving imported ingredients into the prepared-food section: the threshold remains, but the everyday feel grows. Calling an adversary mad is less an analysis than an admission that deterrence cannot rest on the assumption of a rational cost calculation. PRESSAl JazeeraIran War Live: Saudi Coalition Hits Houthi Sites; Aramco Office Hit in East ↗
14 Oct, 09:00 JST
A Saudi Aramco building has been hit in Dhahran, following Saudi-led coalition strikes on Houthi 'vital assets' in Yemen.
Editor’s take
An Aramco building is hit, and retaliation calls forth more retaliation. That chain seeps into distant supply lines and everyday prices. Like a neighbor's fire jumping to your yard depending on the wind, a regional clash burns places that seem unrelated. Regardless of who fired and why, the structure that spreads harm is itself the danger.

A comment about AI from Broadcom's chief executive has set off wide reaction. Observers are split on whether he sounded bullish or bearish on the sector.
Editor’s take
When the head of a chipmaker calls the market's participants gamblers, the remark reveals less about the gamblers than about who takes the house's cut. In a market priced by narrative, anyone who reads a headline as a fundamental gets quietly skimmed. If demand holds through the next earnings round, this reading is wrong.

Micron's stock has extended its declines amid intensifying competition from China.
Editor’s take
A falling share price during a competitive fight is often the market discounting future margins in advance; if actual results hold up, that view can flip. Like umbrella prices moving on a weather forecast, chip stocks react to numbers nobody has seen yet. Whether the decline continues depends on whether competition is truly eroding profit or only speculation is running ahead of it.

South Korea's equity market is reported to be falling sharply, and the article is framed around the reasons for it. The material supplied is only the headline and an image credit, so the scale of the drop and the reasons themselves are not shown.
Editor’s take
Prices absorb a selloff long before anyone agrees on its cause. Chasing a crowd toward a platform, you usually arrive after the train has gone. Someone who acts on the headline alone ends up trading at a price that already contains the fall.

PRESSAl JazeeraIsraeli military raids NGO offices in Ramallah ↗
13 Oct, 19:53 JST
Israeli forces raided several NGO offices in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, according to an Al Jazeera reporter on the ground.
Editor’s take
When military raids target humanitarian offices, the practical consequence is that aid routes to the most vulnerable are cut off. It is like a single bridge washing out in a storm, isolating a whole town. This event suggests that civilian infrastructure in conflict zones is increasingly treated as a legitimate target.

Houthi attacks on airports and oil sites have intensified, and Saudi Arabia is described as facing a grim choice.
Editor’s take
A cycle of retaliation raises daily costs first when its targets are airports and oil fields. Concessions to stop the attacks and wider retaliation both put the burden on ordinary people first. It is like soaking your own table while aiming water at a neighbor's fire.

Iran-backed militants are tightening the screws on Saudi Arabia's crown prince, according to a report behind a paywall.
Editor’s take
Pressure on a single leader does not translate directly into better lives for the population. A checkmate threat is aimed at a piece on the board; the audience outside the board keeps living as before. If the aim is to weaken a government, ordinary people's anxiety rises before any negotiation begins.

Zelenskyy claims strikes on Russian data centers silenced social media bots. The claim, shared via a Gizmodo article on Reddit, lacks details or verification.
Editor’s take
Targeting data centers to stop propaganda resembles cutting a neighborhood's phone lines to quell rumors. If military and civilian communications share the same infrastructure, such strikes can reach ordinary users. Silencing bots does not erase the apparatus of information manipulation.

IDC says China's Q3 smartphone shipments fell 15.4% year over year to 57.9 million units, the sixth straight quarterly decline; Huawei led with 21% and Apple had 17.8%.
Editor’s take
When an entire market keeps shrinking, a reshuffling of ranks means competition has shifted from a growth story to a fight over existing customers. It is like arguing over seats in a room that is getting smaller: there can be a winner, but the space does not expand. Whether the leader's strength signals a shift to higher price tiers or longer replacement cycles can be checked against the next shipment figures.

At the Open Compute Project summit Intel detailed its D-series data-centre GPU: up to 480 GB LPDDR5X, 1.5 TB/s bandwidth and 1.3 PFLOPS FP8 in a 350 W air-cooled card.
Editor’s take
The more memory gathers onto a single card, the more the answer to where large intelligence should live changes. It is the same logic as a bigger refrigerator meaning fewer trips to the shop. If an ordinary air-cooled card can do this, the places that run large models need not be a handful of vast facilities.

At the Open Compute Project Global Summit on 12 October 2026 Intel released technical details for its data-centre GPU D-series. The card reaches up to 480 GB of LPDDR5X memory, 1.5 TB/s of memory bandwidth and 1.3 PFLOPS of FP8 compute inside a 350 W air-cooled standard PCIe card. Customer sampling is underway. Intel's own branded card carries 160 GB while partner ODM cards reach 480 GB. Intel says it supports models up to 300 billion parameters on a single card and more than 1 trillion parameters across an eight-GPU system. Here's what I think this implies. Intel designed the D-series and is the only vendor sampling it, so whether capacity-bound inference buyers take the card accrues directly to its data-centre accelerator line. NVIDIA is exposed the other way. Intel benchmarks the card against the RTX PRO 6000, the incumbent air-cooled PCIe inference card with a fraction of the memory, so NVIDIA loses capacity-bound serving share if a 350 W card holding a 300-billion-parameter model proves adequate. The earliest test is Intel's third-quarter results on 29 October 2026. The question is whether Intel attaches D-series customer commitments, volume-production or general-availability timing to the sampling it has now confirmed. Separately, the first ODM announcement of a 480 GB D-series card would confirm the high-capacity configuration is actually being built. If published or independently measured serving throughput on long-context, high-concurrency workloads lands far below HBM-based alternatives at the same model size, the capacity advantage will not convert into deployments. Intel has released peak FP8 compute and bandwidth but no throughput figures. Equally, if the 480 GB configuration never ships as an ODM part and the line stays at Intel's 160 GB card, the single-card 300-billion-parameter claim never

13 Oct, 17:09 JST
Zelensky said Russia has hit six energy sites since the moves around Trump's ceasefire. The question now is how far a declared ceasefire actually holds on the ground.
Editor’s take
If the word ceasefire spreads first while strikes on facilities continue, the agreement can only be measured by damage records, not by the announcement. It is like saying the rain has stopped while the shutters are still closed: the wet ground outside is the counter-evidence. If the gap between declaration and action persists, the next agreement will be discounted before it is even read.

PRESSAl JazeeraDrone attack sinks ship off Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, PM says ↗
13 Oct, 16:36 JST
Bulgaria's prime minister says a ship was sunk in a drone attack off the country's Black Sea coast. Two vessels were hit, including the Ukrainian-owned Chelsea 3, which was damaged.
Editor’s take
When strikes in shared waters land on merchant vessels rather than warships, war has to be treated as something that does not respect a boundary line. It is like a broken traffic signal at a junction where nobody stops, and blame only gets sorted out after the crash. If another vessel is hit in these waters, nothing released so far would let an observer tell an accident from a deliberate target.

Three Yandex data centers have been heavily damaged by Ukrainian drone strikes, and the switch to backup systems appears not to have worked, leaving many services under the company's umbrella affected.
Editor’s take
A backup that sits inside the same blast radius is not a backup; it is a copy of the same weakness. When one drone strike can darken an entire ecosystem of everyday services at once, the failure belongs to design rather than luck. Redundancy only means something when the second copy lives in a different world from the first.
