Amazon's active warehouse robots pass 1 million, alongside 1.5 million workers ↗

13 Oct, 15:30 JST

An Ars Technica deep dive reports that Amazon now runs more than 1 million active warehouse robots while remaining the world's second-largest corporate employer with 1.5 million workers.

Editor’s take

The threshold that matters is not when machines outnumber people, but when people begin pacing themselves to machines. The warehouse is becoming less a workplace with tools than a habitat shared by two species running on different clocks. Employment totals may hold for years while the share of work that involves judgment quietly shrinks.

Two ships hit by drones in Black Sea, one sank, Bulgaria's PM says ↗

13 Oct, 15:26 JST

Bulgaria's prime minister says two ships were hit by drones in the Black Sea and one of them sank.

Editor’s take

The safety of sea lanes feeds straight into the price tags of everyday goods. One bridge falling on your commute is enough to change the shelves in a distant shop. If cheap drones can sink merchant vessels, escort costs travel back to shippers and buyers, and that shows up in insurance premiums and freight rates.

Bitcoin's quantum wake-up call: 1.79M exchange BTC with exposed public keys ↗

13 Oct, 15:03 JST

A perspective post on r/CryptoCurrency says 1.79 million bitcoin on exchanges have exposed public keys, citing a Substack article on the quantum threat.

Editor’s take

Warnings about quantum risk tend to work by using a distant danger to stoke present anxiety. It is like hearing earthquake-insurance talk while your keys sit with someone else: the question that matters is not how big the threat is but who holds your keys. If posts like this spread without any checkable account of what would actually happen, neither the people moving their holdings nor the people building safeguards are moved by it.

Q3 smartphone shipments fell 20%; Samsung and Apple gained share ↗

13 Oct, 14:41 JST

Counterpoint: Q3 smartphone shipments fell 20% year on year; Samsung led at 23% share and Apple at 22%, while Xiaomi, Oppo and vivo all lost ground.

Editor’s take

When the whole market shrinks and only two brands take a larger slice, the story is not that phones got worse but that buyers are consolidating. It is like a smaller dinner table where the same two dishes get served first. If the next quarter shows those same two names gaining while the total keeps falling, the pattern is structural rather than a one-off.

Epic Games shifts its Disney co-developed title toward AI-centric development ↗

13 Oct, 14:14 JST

Epic Games, the studio behind Fortnite, has delayed the game it is building with Disney and shifted toward heavier use of AI in development. Internal instructions reportedly state that hand-written code is no longer needed.

Editor’s take

Deciding that hand-written code is no longer needed puts speed ahead of the craft of the people who make the thing. It is like cutting cooking time without ever tasting the dish. Starlink Mobile called an existential threat to Verizon ↗

A Reddit technology post shared a PhoneArena article arguing that Starlink Mobile poses an existential threat to Verizon.

Blur, once among the biggest NFT marketplaces on Ethereum, has announced it is shutting down, with a 99% collapse in trading volume cited as the backdrop.

A valuation is only other people's expectations piled up; when the venue disappears, just the record stays in your wallet. 13 Oct, 13:30 JST

A Saudi minister has vowed a "serious response" after Houthi attacks hit Riyadh's international airport and another facility, killing 13 people in a significant escalation.

Ukraine's president says Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure are continuing despite an 'energy ceasefire', casting doubt on the truce's effect.

Editor’s take

A truce announced while the windows stay lit in the dark is a claim outsiders can check at a glance. That gap between words and the ground erodes trust faster than any dispute over terms. The longer strikes continue under the truce's name, the weaker the motive to sign the next one becomes.

A limited group of Android beta testers can now schedule messages for a set date and time, in one-on-one and group chats, delivered even if the device is offline.

Editor’s take

Picking the hour a message lands looks less like respecting the other person's time than like postponing a reply you would rather not send yet. Dropping a letter in the post box so it arrives while you sleep is a mild convenience; bringing that ease into conversations built on immediacy changes what silence means. Aptos rolls out encrypted mempool to curb frontrunning and sandwich attacks ↗

13 Oct, 09:52 JST

Aptos has introduced an encrypted mempool intended to curb frontrunning and sandwich attacks, according to the announcement.

Editor’s take

Hiding the contents of an order is close to taking the telescope away from the frontrunner, but it also means validators work on top of a new layer of opacity. If an encrypted mempool really does squeeze the profit out of sandwiching, the first place it shows up is the spread between exchanges and self-custody wallets, not a curve in a whitepaper. Turning an execution into a broadcast changes punishment into a stage with an audience. Just as the smell of food can manufacture an appetite, a camera turns an event into something to be consumed. Nothing has begun rolling out Nothing OS 5.0, built on Android 17, to the Phone (3) after an open beta. The rollout is staggered, so timing varies by region and device. A redesigned launcher and a Micrographics feature are included.

Two people who bought the same handset can end up with the new software weeks apart, purely because of where they live. The moment a feature becomes available is set by a company's rollout plan rather than by the owner of the device. Post ties drained hardware wallets to third-party resellers ↗

13 Oct, 07:02 JST

One Reddit post blames drained hardware wallets on third-party sellers in Asia who could plant screen-reading chips to steal seed phrases, and says direct purchases would have prevented it.

Editor’s take

Cold storage promises that the key never leaves your hands, and the supply chain is the part of that promise nobody can see. A claim like this one stands or falls on whether the tampering it describes can actually be found in the device or the route it traveled. Without that check, self-custody is a safe bought from a stranger whose combination may already be known.

Cold Card was some shitty little company no one had heard of that had plenty of issues brought up to the company and they refused to do anything about it. With Ledger this is related to supply chain, but these wallets that were drained were from 3rd party sellers in Asia that were able to install chips that could read the screen and thus have access to seeds. This all could have been prevented if these people had simply purchased the wallets directly from the manufacturer. This wallet saw roughly 100m$ in funds drained, but Ledger wallets overall have funds in excess of 100 BILLION $. Basically, don't try to get weird with wallets and just buy directly from the top manufacturers in the space. Also consider using multiple wallets when you get large crypto holdings so you don't have all of your funds in one basket.

13 Oct, 04:47 JST

Texas pastor Joel Webbon, in a since-deleted post, compared Israel supporter Mike Huckabee to Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan and called for his execution.

Editor’s take

When a pastor names a political enemy for execution on social media, what is at work is less religious fervor than the habit of turning violence into a talking point. It is like a joke at the family table that lands as a wound: the weight of words is set by who receives them, not by the status of the speaker. Once religious authority borrows the vocabulary of violence, that vocabulary seeps into how believers read ordinary disagreements, and the line between preaching and threatening blurs.

Fake RTX 4090 with dummy die and swapped memory sold for $350 ↗

A repair specialist found a counterfeit RTX 4090 with a fake die and dummy memory chips. The buyer paid $350 for a bare board and could not test it first.

Editor’s take

Faking the outside costs far less than making the inside real, so every convincing counterfeit quietly draws down the market's stock of trust — like repackaging cheap meat in a premium box, where one bad bite makes every later package suspect. The more this scam spreads, the less used hardware looks like a bargain and the more it looks like an asset needing expert inspection, and private deals get sorted by verification cost rather than price.

A GPU repair specialist has uncovered another GPU scam involving a counterfeit RTX 4090, with a fake GPU die and memory chips designed to resemble genuine components. The graphics card was purchased for 30,000 Rubles, or approximately $350, as a potential repair project. However, upon close inspection, it was revealed that the board was fitted with dummy components. According to VIK-off (h/t VideoCardz), the Russian repair specialist received the GPU from a customer who purchased the card as a bare printed circuit board (PCB). Since the original cooling system was missing, it was difficult to verify whether it actually worked before the purchase was made. Now we’ve seen similar scams in the past, but this particular case stands out due to the sheer effort that was put into making the counterfeit components. According to Vik-Off, the counterfeiters managed to replicate intricate details including the labeling, GPU package, chip markings, as well as the compound surrounding the processor. The fake GPU die was even soldered onto the PCB using a ball grid array (BGA), making it appear as though it had been installed during the original manufacturing process. However, certain inconsistencies gave it away, like the color of the substrate, surface reflections, and certain lettering. After removing the fake GPU package, the repair specialist found that its contact area did not resemble that of a functional processor, while the solder mask started to deteriorate during cleaning. South Korea sees first traditional bank loans backed by bitcoin ↗

South Korea has reportedly seen its first traditional bank loans backed by bitcoin. The move marks a case of an established bank lending against crypto collateral.

Banks accepting crypto as collateral graft speculation onto the existing credit system. If collateral value plunges, borrowers' plans and bank balance sheets can shake together. Zelenskyy accuses Russia of breaching the 'energy ceasefire' as EU adds sanctions ↗

12 Oct, 19:35 JST

Ukraine's president says Russia is violating the 'energy ceasefire' proposed by Trump, while the EU said it formally added almost 1,600 new sanctions targeting Russia's military industrial complex.

Editor’s take

Whether a ceasefire holds shows up in substations and refineries, not in the document naming it. Buckets under a leaking roof, refilled by each sanctions round, keep a room dry only while someone bails. If energy sites keep being struck, the growing sanction count will mark the absence of movement at the table.

EU votes through largest-ever Russia sanctions list ↗

12 Oct, 19:35 JST

The EU has voted through what is described as its largest-ever Russia sanctions list. Who is on it, how far it reaches and when it takes effect are not yet spelled out.

Editor’s take

A longer sanctions list changes paperwork long before it changes a battlefield, and the first place most people meet it is the payment counter. Like a tap whose pressure drops slightly, the effect arrives as slower transfers and extra questions from banks rather than as a headline. If that never happens, this round will read as symbolism rather than pressure.

Another report points to a pricier Galaxy S27 series ↗

12 Oct, 19:34 JST

A South Korean report says Samsung is considering raising Galaxy S27 prices by $75 to $100, citing higher memory costs. Whether that lands on top of the Galaxy S26 increases is left unclear.

Editor’s take

When memory prices climb, it is AI's appetite being served first and the household budget settling the bill, much as rising ingredient costs show up in the price of a set meal. The extra money here buys no better design; it is a supply squeeze passed downstream. If memory supply eases and prices quietly fall back, that reading is confirmed; if they stay put, the AI boom has effectively become a fixed surcharge on ordinary devices.

Earlier this month, a rumor suggested that Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S27 series would be more expensive than the Galaxy S26 lineup. Now, another report has emerged supporting the possibility of a price hike. According to South Korean publication Chosun, Samsung is considering raising prices for the Galaxy S27 series between $75 to $100. The report attributes the potential increase to rising memory prices. Ben Affleck sold his AI company for $587M, then questioned how data is captioned ↗

12 Oct, 18:59 JST

A Reddit post says he found existing captioning inadequate and built an owned dataset with LiDAR, Unreal and volume stages, not peer footage.

Editor’s take

Whoever owns the data owns the leverage in video AI, and that read holds up. Judgement on set is like the final pinch of salt in a dish: no pile of harvested footage supplies it. The claim that the last call stays human is falsifiable — it collapses the moment a model learns the whole edit.

Goldman Sachs flips bullish on stocks for the rest of the year ↗

MarketWatch reports that Goldman Sachs has turned bullish on equities for the remainder of the year.

New E-Reader Review: Gorgeous, Expensive, and Short on Reasons to Upgrade ↗

12 Oct, 18:04 JST

Wired's review praises the blue finish and premium feel, but says the reading experience offers owners of a working Kindle little reason to replace it.

Editor’s take

The appeal sits in the colour and the feel in the hand, while the act of reading is left essentially untouched. Refinishing the shell without changing how pages read is like reupholstering a chair that already sits comfortably. For anyone whose current device still works, the difference appears in the palm, not on the page.

A bug that could have threatened XRP's 100 billion supply cap stayed hidden for years ↗

12 Oct, 17:32 JST

The report examines why a bug that could have put XRP's 100 billion token supply cap at risk went undisclosed for a long time.

Editor’s take

A supply cap is a promise only to those who can read the code; for everyone else it holds because the price has not yet given them a reason to doubt it. Attention to safety tends to arrive with falling prices rather than with disclosure. It is like trusting a warranty whose terms you cannot read because the box looks unopened.

Hacked civilian cameras became war tools, 250+ Israeli cameras hit ↗

12 Oct, 17:05 JST

The Wall Street Journal reports Israel tapped Iranian traffic cameras before Khamenei was killed, and Iran-linked groups hit over 250 Israeli cameras.

Editor’s take

A camera bought to watch the doorway is rented out to whoever guesses the password, and the tenant may be a state. Cheap surveillance lowers the cost of picking targets, so the weakest device on a block becomes a point on someone else's map. Treating consumer hardware as private infrastructure is a bet that has already been lost.

Math world and AI clash in public over the release of 722 manuscripts ↗

12 Oct, 14:42 JST

@rohanpaul_ai cited Terence Tao's remark that AI is solving major conjectures but has yet to create real value, and noted the Association for Human Mathematics criticizing OpenAI for releasing 722 math manuscripts the day before, urging mathematicians to stop cooperating.

Kael wrote about this · 2026-09-12 ↗

Editor’s take

The worth of mathematics rests less on whether a conjecture falls than on whether people can still inspect and understand how it fell. Manuscripts released by the hundreds look less like a harvest than grain piled into a warehouse. If calls to halt collaboration actually slow research down, that would be evidence not of AI's limits but of how thin the discipline's self-governance had become.

vivo's X Fold6 is now in India in Prism Black and Nebula Teal after its China launch. This hands-on covers the Nebula Teal unit, boxed like the global version.

Editor’s take

A colourway hands-on draws attention because choosing has become part of the product. Where box and hardware are identical across markets, only colour and timing differ, so the decision moves from spec sheet to shade. It is like the same dish served on a new plate.

French lawmakers back reporting rule for crypto wallets above $112K ↗

12 Oct, 13:45 JST

French lawmakers backed a reporting rule for crypto wallets holding more than $112,000. Who must report, and how the rule applies to individuals, is not yet set out.

Editor’s take

Attaching a name to a pseudonymous asset looks like a limit on freedom, but it is also how a market starts answering to the society it sits in. A society that leaves the safe unlabeled eventually cannot say whose safe it is. If the reporting net reaches individual transaction histories, the argument stops being about assets and becomes about what people may keep private.

North Korea fires multiple ballistic missiles towards the sea ↗

12 Oct, 12:37 JST

Seoul says the latest launch appears to be a show of force following South Korea's hypersonic missile test-fire.

Editor’s take

A show of force is a performance staged for the other side, but being a performance is no proof of safety. It is like neighbours knocking on a shared wall to see who is louder: the noise harms no one, yet the wall carries only so much. Each round of display and counter-display raises, a little, the chance that the one that was only a drill turns into the one that was real.

New Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini pre-orders said to start this week ↗

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that new Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini models will be unveiled on Tuesday, October 13 and launch on Friday, October 30, with pre-orders expected to begin this week.

Editor’s take

The worth of a new box is measured by how differently the room feels on the evening it arrives. The decision to replace something usually comes from small accumulated annoyances with the device already on the shelf rather than from a list of added features. Swap one bulb and the rest of the room suddenly looks older.

UK PM Says It Is 'Clear' Russia Interfered in Brexit Vote ↗

UK PM Andy Burnham has said it is "clear" that Russia interfered in the vote to leave the EU. This is said to be the first time a UK prime minister has publicly acknowledged such interference.
