The Pope's message on AI is landing in Silicon Valley and beyond ↗

30 Sept, 07:13 JST

The RNS writer says meetings with tech leaders and officials left him surprised by the interest in and respect for what the US Church can offer as AI accelerates.

Editor’s take

The faster AI moves, the more demand there is for words that give that speed a meaning, which is not surprising. Like people feeling for a flashlight in a dark room, the field is reaching for whatever moral vocabulary is within arm's reach. Whether the respect is real can be judged later, by whether any of it is written into rules or code.

New Jersey Muslims sue township for mosque denial, alleging discrimination ↗

30 Sept, 07:06 JST

The federal complaint alleges the zoning board bowed to anti-Muslim pressure and violated the Muslim Center’s constitutional rights.

Editor’s take

Taking the permit fight into federal court puts the neutral look of local planning onto an evidence stand. If anti-Muslim pressure, rather than ordinary zoning standards, drove the denial, the approval process was less like an automatic traffic light and more like a manually operated gate; the consequence is that similar applications will face heavier documentation demands. That does not prove discrimination, but it narrows the room for a municipality to reject a mosque with a bare technical rationale.

Hollywood's big debt deal hits a wall of higher yields as Paramount finances Warner Bros. buyout ↗

30 Sept, 06:56 JST

Paramount's financing for a Warner Bros. buyout is running into higher yields, complicating one of Hollywood's largest debt deals.

Editor’s take

A wall of higher yields means the price of buying a story has gone up. It is like a studio discovering the theater rent rose before shooting the sequel. If financing costs stay at this level, the restructuring is likely to surface as fewer releases and deeper staff cuts rather than as anything visible in a trailer.

Cboe’s New S&P Deal Opens Door to Tokenized Options ↗

30 Sept, 06:16 JST

The renewed agreement preserves Cboe’s exclusive rights to S&P 500 index options through 2051 while opening the door to pairing the benchmark with blockchain infrastructure.

Editor’s take

Linking a traditional benchmark to blockchain rails can widen access, but without rules and liquidity design it becomes freedom in appearance only. It is like building a new bridge without first checking the piers. If regulatory approval and clearing arrangements are not in place, tokenized options will not reach real institutional demand.

30 Sept, 04:19 JST

Heather Thompson Day and Seth Day, co-authors of a best-selling Christian book on relationships, have been arrested for alleged abuse. Details remain unclear.

Editor’s take

The arrest of the co-authors of a best-selling relationship guide on suspicion of abuse lands not as mere gossip but as a collapse of trust for readers who expect the teaching to match the life. Bloomberg reports that some investors approached about buying shares in Oura's now-delayed IPO declined, citing the ~$15 billion target valuation and poor post-listing performance of peers such as Fitbit.

Editor’s take

Spain drafts stricter asylum rules for Ceuta after border crisis, decree shows ↗

30 Sept, 00:31 JST

A report shared on r/worldnews says Spain is preparing a draft decree tightening rules for asylum seekers in Ceuta after a border crisis. The measure remains at the announcement stage.

Editor’s take

Border policy tightens like a tap: only the handle turns, yet everyone waiting under the spout has to queue again. A crackdown announced before its details are public usually changes behaviour on the ground first, as officials, intermediaries and applicants all adjust ahead of the text. If the final rules end up narrower than current practice, the number of people stuck at the frontier grows rather than shrinks.

What Does Neutrality Mean in an Age of AI and Cyberwar? ↗

29 Sept, 23:41 JST

A pointer to a Swiss public-broadcaster piece asking whether Switzerland can stay neutral while the US and China race on AI, sharpening the question of what neutrality means when the contest runs through code and compute.

Editor’s take

Neutrality in this framing behaves less like a moral stance than like a household's supply list: you are unaligned only as long as both suppliers will still sell to you. Once chips, models and data can be bought from one side alone, the label outlives the practice. That makes procurement records a more falsifiable test of neutrality than any declaration.

Which AI models use the most energy? ↗

29 Sept, 22:56 JST

AI's rise is driving a historic surge in electricity demand, pushing up fossil fuel use. Consumption tracks user queries, and models vary in efficiency.

Editor’s take

Turn a tap and the water may come from a different river each time. Same question, very different fuel economy, and the bill lands where nobody can read it. If usage grows while users cannot pick the model, grid load will depend less on who asks than on which model answers.

r/artificial · u/relianceschool · 1 points · 0 comments · Energy Linked: https://cleer.pages.dev/ The rise of artificial intelligence is driving an historic surge in electricity demand that’s boosting fossil fuel use and threatening climate progress. All this electricity doesn’t power AI in some generalized, always-on way, though. Data centers’ energy consumption is a function of the millions of individual queries users submit to AI programs such as Claude and ChatGPT. When it comes to how efficiently models process those queries and generate responses, AI models are not interchangeable. Some are more like gas guzzlers, others more like Priuses. When a user engages an AI chatbot or AI agent, there’s essentially no way for them to know which kind of vehicle they are stepping into. They may know which company built it, and even the precise model name and number, but no AI company has published information about how much energy one model uses compared to another. In the absence of corporate disclosure from the big three proprietary AI developers — Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google — researchers with the Sustainable AI Group, a research and advisory company, developed a backdoor method to estimate and compare the amount of energy these developers’ models consume. They published their findings on Tuesday in an interactive dashboard that ranks AI programs by energy intensity.

Holy See: a 'culture of responsibility' is needed against new forms of financial crime ↗

29 Sept, 21:19 JST

The Holy See has taken the position that countering new forms of financial crime requires a culture of responsibility. The full text and any concrete measures have not been conveyed.

Editor’s take

A call for a "culture of responsibility" asks something harder than adding rules: it asks who does the judging, and to whom that judgment answers. It is less like fitting another lock and more like choosing who holds the key. New forms of financial crime arrive at the speed of their tools, so if norms lag, responsibility spills outside the institution. If this statement does not turn into supervisory or legal consequences, it will be consumed as moral exhortation while the desks where transactions are cleared keep working in exactly the same way.

Cardinal Koch of the Vatican has said that maintaining peace among the Churches is a responsibility for Europe.

Editor’s take

Treating peace among the Churches as Europe's responsibility reflects a stance that does not lock religion into the private sphere but treats it as a public matter. 'Friendship pandas' from China land in the US, bound for Zoo Atlanta ↗

29 Sept, 05:53 JST

Two giant pandas from China have landed in the United States and are heading to Zoo Atlanta, in what is framed as a moment in US-China relations.

Editor’s take

Even when diplomacy cools, animal transfers still share the same news columns. It is like handing a neighbor a potted plant when the relationship is awkward: a small gift keeps a window open. These exchanges, kept apart from political disputes, will likely continue without interruption.

A surprising number of Americans use AI for spiritual reasons, poll finds ↗

29 Sept, 05:49 JST

The poll found 11% of AI users have sought spiritual guidance from AI, 13% have used it to generate prayers, and 15% to study Scripture.

Editor’s take

When whoever sits across from you in prayer changes from a person to a machine, the faith itself need not thin out. It is like looking up a word: the page became a screen, but the searching remains. These shares more likely show people who already pray swapping tools than a rise in unbelief.

Slovenia’s U-turn towards Israel ↗

29 Sept, 05:35 JST

Slovenia’s policy towards Palestine changed sharply after a sideline meeting with Israeli PM Netanyahu at the UN General Assembly.

Editor’s take

This episode reinforces the view that diplomacy moves less by principle than by the order and timing of meetings. If a stance can turn sharply after a sideline encounter, consensus depends on people and calendars more than structure. It is like a conference where the hallway chat decides.

Putin decree restricts Russian energy and refining data disclosure ↗

29 Sept, 04:36 JST

A post links to an RBC Ukraine article saying that under a new Putin decree, Russia restricts disclosure of energy and refining data.

Editor’s take

Restricting data disclosure thickens market fog and makes outside verification harder. Narrowing information flows is less like lowering a refinery’s smokestack than like smudging a watchman’s glasses. What is hidden should eventually show up as holes in the published statistics.

LlamAmpere v0.4 runs qwen3.8 27B at 95+ TPS and 262K context on one RTX 3090 ↗

29 Sept, 03:35 JST

LlamAmpere v0.4, an Ampere-focused Llama.cpp fork, reports about 10% faster speeds than the prior version on a 4.6bpw model, over 10% more max context, and within 10% of vLLM.

Editor’s take

Running long-context models on a consumer GPU without renting cloud capacity does push AI computation back toward personal hardware. Whether the posted numbers survive third-party reproduction is testable, and if the gap to rivals is small, the set of practical choices grows. It is like digging a well in the yard again, not to reject the water company but to keep a tap you control.

A little while back I posted about [LlamAmpere](https://github.com/JakeATX/llamAmpere/blob/main/QWEN_AMPERE.md#build-and-run), a fork of Llama.cpp with Ampere-specific improvements (though it is caught up to main and will support other hardware, too). Thank you to everyone that tried it out and shared back their results across the 30xx cards. I'm happy to share I've pushed v0.4 out this morning. On the 4.6bpw model tested, speeds improved \~10% vs the last version while also improving the max context by 10%+ (technically, it can go above 262K, but I have not tested any custom kernels or graphs to support YaRN). The closest competition comes from vLLM, keeping within <10%, but does so with lower maximum context. It is significantly faster than other llama.cpp options tested. https://preview.redd.it/u70q7lew1bsh1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=a732113292448cdec9ba98e27c0855a25e5e3434 [](https://preview.redd.it/95-tps-through-100k-generated-262k-ctx-on-a-single-3090-v0-sztwrh91yash1.png?width=1750&format=png&auto=webp&s=18630f4305efa3d8ed2fc5f1531718474b464b10) There's also a number of other improvements for other quants/formats, with EXL3 seeing significant speed up (\~80% the speed of the 4-XS-M [quant](https://huggingface.co/jakeatx/ATX-Swift-Qwen3.8-27B-Uncensored-IQ4_XS-M-GGUF) tested). It has a slightly lower KLD, but not a range I have found stat significance for at the task level, so I sticking with the XS-M model for now (built on top of Swift-qwen's distill, which is far more token efficient than the stock train for \~1% [performance](https://huggingface.co/datasets/jakeatx/ATX-Swift-Qwen3.8-27B-Uncensored-IQ4_XS-M-LiveCodeBench-v6) loss). the 4.3 bpw EXL3 model does provide a bit more room if you are interested in 2+ concurrent predictions. Bybit to accept Franklin Templeton tokenized funds as trading collateral ↗

29 Sept, 03:02 JST

Bybit will accept Franklin Templeton tokenized funds as collateral for trades, folding a traditional asset into a crypto exchange's credit base.

Editor’s take

A regulated fund entering an exchange's collateral stack looks like one more place to trust, yet it mainly means the two places can no longer be doubted separately. It is less like building a second bridge than switching bridges halfway across. The moment redemptions on the fund side slow, it becomes clear where the collateral chain jams.

'Vive le Pape!' — Pope Leo in Metz ↗

29 Sept, 02:40 JST

Vatican News reports on Pope Leo's visit to Metz under the banner 'Vive le Pape!'

Editor’s take

A papal visit is a ritual that can either strengthen a community's bonds or expose how thin those bonds have become. If the enthusiasm is genuine, local community groups and charities will see a measurable bump in volunteers and donations after the event. It's like a festival that leaves behind either stronger neighbors or just litter.

Star operators drifting toward AI firms changes who ends up holding the unglamorous plumbing everything else sits on.
