Nvidia Is Right: Its Stock Is a Bargain by This Measure ↗

Still took my v100s running 4x instances at 25tps, like 96 hours of non stop generation to complete the dataset. I opted not to go for a pre-existing public dataset because I wanted to practice building my own distillation engine (which was configured to work off of an OpenAI compatible endpoint, so it'll distill anything you can hook it up to). The final dataset (this time) consists of 3340 samples: 1760 of general instruct transcripts, and 1580 agentic specific work rows about SWE, harnesses, terminals, etc - I gave the distilling engine a python sandbox and got to simulate turn driven development with a user, and I trained for a bunch of different harness syntax for tool calls, which hopefully will be enough to generalize - gonna run 2 epochs at first. My GPUs are sobbing right now - turned them on on Friday and left for a weekend vacation, got back today, waited an hour for the data to finish generating, and then immediately fired up the train. The stuff above is the short version. I'm guessing the initial SFT train will take about 3-6 days, and I plan on working on a RL implementation after I'm satisfied that the SFT has at least worked properly. I am training a rank 16 QLoRa adapter on only q/k/v/o proj

The Pope said Europe's future is found not in uniformity but in the "harmony of differences". The image released with the statement relates to a Mass at a cathedral during an apostolic journey to France; the full text of the address is not provided.
Editor’s take
"Harmony of differences" recalls something ordinary: a hot pot does not taste better because every ingredient has been cut into the same shape. When AI agents become the ones actually deciding where funds sit, the disappearance of cheap deposits is less a banking crisis than a quiet transfer of pricing power away from savers. It is like the household meter switching to remote reading: the bill looks the same, but someone else is doing the counting. The tell is whether banks start paying more to hold ordinary deposits. Saying that God never inspires anything disfiguring human dignity quietly moves the test of faith from the sacred text to the person standing in front of you. Here are some numbers I got during a chat. "[6204 chunks in 119.0 s | encode: 1239 tok/s | decode: 57 tok/s]" That's with MTP on. The PP speed in particular is just so fast. That PP speed is twice the speed of the fastest Strix Halo specific fork of llama.cpp I've ever used. So having heard the bull and bear cases for AI for a while, I've gotten kind of fed up with what I think are bad analyses from both sides. I've heard many estimates from both of them that just flat out don't make sense, or seem completely unfounded and unreasonable. While I do think the technology has been of uses (especially if it's able to get more efficient and work out it's flaws) I have in general been rather bearish on the AI business investment, but lately I've been increasingly thinking that without a good estimate on how much AI could bring in, I really have no case to support my own thoughts. Sure, the amount of money AI providers and hyperscalars are spending seems unreasonable, but if they are able to bring in enough money, then it obviously was more than reasonable. The situation reminded me of the story I heard about Tycho Brahe, when he published his estimates on how large and far away stars would have to be for us to not be able to detect their parallax, and called the sizes "absurdities". A contemporary of his time named Rothmann responsed to him with: >"What is so absurd about a star having a size equal to the whole Earth's orbit? ...These things must be entirely demonstrated by you, if you will wish to infer from here anything of the absurd." So I figure that, if I wanted to continue to support the claim that the hyperscalars are spending too much, I should demonstrate to myself if it was absurd or not. Just to be upfront, while I have done some estimates similar to this for other subjects, I am by no means a professional, and by no means am I taking my own calculations as gospel. Also, since I know this will come up, I used AI to assist me in finding some of the stats, but the ideas were mine, the math was done by me, and this was written by me. Read the sourceAI May Not Ruin Education. It May Reveal That Little Learning Was Happening. ↗
28 Sept, 14:30 JST
AI writes essays and solves problems almost instantly, easing cheating. If an assignment can end without understanding, what did it measure? Tutor and struggle-eraser are the same tool.
Editor’s take
If an assignment only measured recall, AI does not steal learning; it exposes an empty meter. In classrooms that grade discussion and process, the same tool can narrow gaps rather than widen them. It is a bathroom scale that finally shows the number people were hiding.

Students can now use AI to write essays, explain difficult concepts, and solve problems almost instantly. That makes cheating easier, but it also exposes a deeper issue: if an assignment can be completed without understanding anything, was the assignment measuring learning in the first place? The answer probably depends on how AI is used. A student can use it as a tutor, or as a machine that removes every moment of productive struggle. Should schools ban AI from assignments, redesign assignments around discussion and process, or accept that memorization is no longer the main skill?

A Reddit world news post says far-right settlers are diverting West Bank spring water while Israel backs heritage site takeovers. It links to an AP report.
Editor’s take
Water is not an abstraction; it is someone's morning, and its loss is rarely recorded. Turning a tap is a small gesture; taking another's well feels unremarkable. If the diversion continues, life around those springs becomes unviable, and who left will be recorded by empty houses.

Serbia’s Aleksandar Vucic has resigned as president and will lead his ruling party into a snap parliamentary election. He aims to become prime minister.
Editor’s take
A president resigning to become prime minister keeps power continuous through an election. If the same figure remains at the center after changing roles, democratic alternation can become a formality. It is like a lead actor changing costumes while the same play continues.

Editor’s take

According to the American ambassador, Trump asked Xi Jinping whether China would like to buy US weapons. A Guardian article link is shared on Reddit.
Editor’s take
Putting weapons sales on the diplomatic agenda can signal that security is being treated as a bargaining chip. If remarks like this recur, allies and markets will read them as a shift in US policy toward China rather than a one-off aside. It is like passing a heated pot across a dinner table: the person handing it over may mean to be sociable, while the receiver measures the risk of burns.

Editor’s take
Making the saved money the headline hands the scoring criteria to the person being scored. "Parity" means something only if a third party reproduces it on the same benchmark; otherwise it is a self-reported figure. It is like two shops cooking from one recipe while only one opens its kitchen.

Officials have confirmed that Iran ordered attacks on Jewish sites in Belgium, according to a report linked from a Reddit post.

This report points to a specific danger: Jewish community sites in Belgium become targets in a geopolitical fight. The concrete consequence is that families once again treat a synagogue visit like crossing a dangerous street. That is not a historical relic but a present-tense calculation.

28 Sept, 11:03 JST
AP reports that Ireland's players wore black armbands and did not take part in the pre-match handshakes in a soccer game against Israel. The competition, the result and any disciplinary response are not given.
Editor’s take
An armband and a withheld handshake turn a pitch into a silent witness stand; silence is harder to edit out than a chant. The falsifiable bet is this: if the aftermath ends in no sanction at all, this kind of pre-match gesture moves from exception to convention, and fixture lists drift closer to political maps. What is protected is the individual's expression; the cost is carried by the bodies that write the procedures.

28 Sept, 10:33 JST
Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel's security minister, released a video in which he is seen threatening to kill Hassan Salameh.
Editor’s take
A minister's on-camera threat to kill a named person held in custody is political theater that also works as leverage, and it stands outside any courtroom process. When state violence becomes video content, the legal standing of the person detained dissolves into the audience's scroll. South Korea is demanding an apology from Ukraine for revealing a prisoner of war transfer.
Editor’s take
A demand for apology over a prisoner transfer is also a fight over wartime information. If disclosure is an offense, future transfers may stay hidden longer, and the public may learn less while governments manage blame. Editor’s take
Tools of international law resemble a household smoke alarm: setting one off is easy, while showing who actually started the fire is separate work. Vatican News presents the third day of Pope Leo's visit to France as an image-led highlights package. Route, venues and spoken content are not visible in the material.
Editor’s take
The highlights format quietly deletes whatever does not photograph: waiting, silence, fatigue. What remains is a trip composed of photogenic moments, and the shape of the journey is decided by the camera rather than by the day itself. Vatican News frames Pope Leo in Lourdes as 'a pilgrim among pilgrims'. The material offers the phrase and an image, but no account of what he did there.
Editor’s take
'A pilgrim among pilgrims' is a posture, a claim to stand in the same line as everyone else. That claim is falsified the moment security and protocol route him around the queue. It is like announcing that one will not cut in line; the announcement is tested by how the line actually moves.

Post: AMD 10% equity deal at 1-cent strike for chips. Did Meta get free compute at AMD holders' expense?
Editor’s take
Share dilution is like a friend drinking free coffee at a café while other customers unknowingly cover the cost. If the view that Meta got compute essentially for free is correct, AMD's existing shareholders are bearing an invisible cost. In fact, even if accounting gains offset the purchase, a transfer of shareholder value can occur outside the financial statements.

Im just looking for some clarification. AMD entered 10% equiry deal with 1 cent strike price beginning of this year in exchange for chips sale. Did meta essentially acquire huge compute capacity for free at the expense of amd shareholders? As i see it, it wont affect meta balance sheet due to gains from equity offsetting their chip purchase, while amd owners are just dilluted. Would that be a correct understanding of the situation?

In Lourdes, France, amid clerical abuse scandals and the Vatican trial of Rev. Marko Rupnik, Pope Leo urged the church to admit failures and told bishops to stay vigilant.
Editor’s take
A religious institution admitting failure can build a bridge to trust that outside criticism rarely reaches. But if that language avoids trials and accountability, the bridge holds only until the next flood. Whether this visit leads to concrete reform is the test of the statement’s weight.
