Apple Maps begins blurring aerial imagery of NASA and U.S. military facilities ↗

Apple Maps now blurs aerial imagery of NASA and U.S. military facilities. Fighter jets on runways and rocket launch pads are no longer visible.

Blurring military and space-agency imagery on public maps limits what viewers can inspect. It sets civilian convenience against transparency and narrows independent scrutiny. It resembles removing a safe's combination from a community bulletin board: less exposure, but another invisible boundary.

Hi all, I'm a Japanese Permanent Resident (PR) holder. I left Japan for work in December 2024, and I'm considering moving back sometime next year. A few details: * I have a **multiple re-entry permit** in my passport, valid until 2028 (the one issued at the Shinagawa Immigration Office that costs around ¥6,000–7,000). * My **Zairyu Card** is valid until 2029. My understanding is that I should be able to return to Japan and resume living there without any issues. However, when I left Japan, the airport immigration officer asked me to fill out the usual re-entry/departure card, even though I showed them my valid multiple re-entry permit. The problem is that **I can't remember what I checked on that form**. I might have indicated that I intended to return within two years, and that's what's making me a bit worried. Could this cause any issues when I return, even though my multiple re-entry permit is still valid? Or was filling out that form just standard procedure, regardless of which permit I had? I still have the departure card attached to my passport. Should I leave it as it is and simply present my multiple re-entry permit when I return? Has anyone been in a similar situation? Thanks!

PRESSAl JazeeraLikud emerges as largest party as Netanyahu bloc edges opposition ↗
28 Oct, 11:53 JST
Netanyahu’s Likud emerged as the single largest party in Israel’s parliamentary election, while his bloc edged past the opposition.
Editor’s take
A slim lead can determine the eventual coalition. A narrow majority is like a table balanced on an unsteady leg: the leading bloc has bargaining power, but its stability still depends on coalition negotiations.

Unlimited OCR 2 figures: 47GB-to-1.77GB memory and 2.3× a general LLM’s accuracy, with no raw data. Weights are released. Giotto benchmarks are self-reported.

Publishing full weights lets others test the claims, a useful step. Yet figures without raw data and vendor-only benchmarks remain hard to separate from advertising unless the same conditions can be reproduced. Like a used-car odometer, even a factual number can mislead without its test route.

Janus Henderson and Centrifuge launched the first licensed fund, bringing the Nasdaq-100 onchain.
Editor’s take
Putting an index onchain is like moving a market stall online: an appealing technical path. If licensing, custody and investor access remain opaque, “verifiability” may be only packaging. Whether the model reduces intermediaries and improves settlement efficiency can be tested by fees, settlement time and participation.

Vatican News reports that Jordanian airstrikes in southern Syria killed at least seven people, including children.
Editor’s take
Reported deaths give the airstrike a clear human cost. A newspaper headline may frame a strategic move, but no headline can restore a lost life. An assessment limited to strategy would overlook the irreversible loss of children’s lives.

27 Oct, 07:04 JST
CART shares rose about 23% in two sessions on buyout rumors; reports said DASH was in late talks to buy it for $17B, possibly closing this week.
Editor’s take
This is a contest being settled by acquisition rather than by a better product. If the reported price holds, the grocery-delivery upside shifts to the buyer and the target's independent upside is capped. It is like two neighboring restaurants merging because neither can afford a price war, not because the food improved.

CART is my 3rd largest position and I noticed it went up \~23% in the last two trading days. I heard the rumors on Friday that CART was seeking buyers, today near close it was reported DASH is in late stage talks to buy for $17B. Potentially closing the deal this week. I’m surprised I haven’t seen any other posts here. As a shareholder of CART I’m a bit disappointed, I was pretty bullish and it was trading so cheap that I was expecting pretty huge returns over the next 5-10yrs. If $17B is correct I’ll still be up about 60% over 15 months ish, which is fine. I also own DASH, albeit a much smaller position. I’m conflicted on my thoughts here, everyone thought DASH could just enter grocery delivery and eat CARTs lunch. I didn’t believe it would be that easy, which is why I had so much CART, but I’m still pretty surprised they’re buying CART for so much. I still think CART is cheap so I guess they’re getting a bargain while trading at a higher valuation, so potentially it’ll be a big value add. DASH is trading down -13% over the last couple trading days, which happens to be very close to a $17B decrease in market cap kinda sus. What’re yalls thoughts?

Apple's iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 fix over 160 security vulnerabilities, including an Apple Intelligence data-access flaw and a Hide My Email address leak.
Editor’s take
A security update is less like changing a door lock and more like quietly replacing the plumbing throughout a building. Apple has not said the flaws were actively exploited, but once the details are public, an unpatched device carries a risk that can be described rather than merely feared.

- Apple's iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 updates fix more than 160 security vulnerabilities, which means it's a good idea to install the software as soon as you can. An Apple Intelligence vulnerability that could let a remote attacker access sensitive data was fixed, as was a Hide My Email bug that could leak the user's real email address. There are more than 30 WebKit fixes, and approximately 15 kernel bugs have been addressed. Six CVEs credit Calif, the team that jailbroke the iPhone Duo on launch day and demonstrated an untethered iOS 27.0.1 jailbreak. Calif researcher Stefan Esser recently said that "most" of the vulnerabilities used for its jailbreak are fixed in iOS 27.2. Apple did not say any of the flaws are known to be actively exploited, but with details published, devices that are not updated could be subject to attack. The number of security fixes in iOS updates continues to grow as AI models have gotten better at locating vulnerabilities. Anthropic Research is credited on three fixes, and four cite OpenAI. Apple has also released iOS 26.7.2 for devices not yet updated to iOS 27. It has many of the same security fixes.Related Roundups: iOS 27, iPadOS 27Related Forum: iOS 27This article, "iOS 27.2 Fixes Over 160 Security Vulnerabilities" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Anthropic's IPO plan outlines confidential ranked lists of up to ten successors per founder, subject to five cofounders' approval, covering founders' voting power.

Private succession lists make continuity of founder voting power a private arrangement. They may stabilize leadership, but without enforceable disclosure they may entrench control. Like a sealed family recipe, confidentiality preserves continuity while hindering scrutiny.

The issue is not AI use itself, but whether access was authorized and intrusions left auditable traces. Without deep IT skills, intrusion remains possible, so harm can spread across organizational boundaries. Like a power drill, the tool is neutral; use and controls determine outcomes.

Christianity Today covers the Book of Common Prayer. Osenga recounts a burst pipe flooding his home while volunteering; his family moved out for six months.
Editor’s take
Attention to a prayer book suggests that an inherited form can still offer meaning. When old words are read in contemporary voices, worship can become a place of renewed understanding rather than a fixed routine. A familiar form is like an old map: its value can change as the traveler changes.

1 Nov, 04:12 JST
A Reddit user is considering a Mac Studio M5U with 256GB and 2TB for local coding and business automation, while keeping an M4 Pro MacBook Pro as the primary development machine. They plan to run Qwen 3.8+ and DeepSeek 4+ locally alongside Claude and GPT.
Editor’s take
This post is tightly framed around workflow design: it keeps an existing laptop in place while considering local models for coding and automation alongside hosted tools. If switching between local and cloud services slows development, the decision is about operating architecture rather than model capability. Tools, like kitchen equipment, become useful when they fit the user's routine.

I'm on the verge of pulling the trigger. Want something local for coding and some business automation stuff. Thinking I'll run Qwen 3.8+ and DeepSeek 4+. I'm coming from M4 Pro MBP and will still use that as my primary dev box. I run both Claude and gpt. I know local isn't quite the same as the hosted. For anyone who has this setup already-- will I love it?
