PRESSRedditUnpaid consultant fees under Japanese law: seeking bilingual law-firm portals ↗
1 Nov, 02:06 JST
Fees are unpaid for eight months under Japanese law. The demand was acknowledged, with no amount or date; bilingual law-firm sites are sought, and JETRO did not help.
Editor’s take
The request exposes a practical gap between cross-border legal needs and accessible support. Without named bilingual lawyers, clear fees, or confirmation that firms accept this type of claim, the feasibility of recovering the fees remains unverified and the dispute may stay unresolved.

I have an independent consultant contract with a company based in Japan. The terms of the contract are governed by the laws of Japan. I'm based in Canada. The company has not fulfilled its fee payment obligations for 8 months. The company has acknowledged my formal demand letter but has neither committed to a payment amount nor provided a date of payment. Could you kindly recommend websites or portals with information about bilingual law firms who will be able to assist in the fee recovery? I have tried contacting a handful but have received no response. I inquired with JETRO as well but their response was not helpful. Thank you.

Update from the lawyer with the V100 server. I went and got two DGX Sparks, because of course I did. The mid-life crisis remains on schedule. Same deal as before: still a lawyer, still driving the whole thing through Claude Code, and Claude Code also ran the benchmarks, built these tables and helped me write this up. I'm Nick Mermiges, Esq., founder of PLI Labs. The repo below is ours. **The setup:** DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 at 2.75 bpw EXL3, vLLM tensor parallel across two Sparks. The twist is a third box, my EPYC with the 3090s, doing two jobs for the Sparks: - it holds the Engram tables in system RAM and serves them over RDMA; - it runs the DSpark speculative drafter on an NVLinked pair of 3090s. The memory that frees on the Sparks goes to KV cache: about 1.93M tokens of pool. There's also a prefix cache on the Sparks' NVMe, so a 150K prompt survives a server restart. First token comes back in 2.58 s instead of 58.6 s cold. **Numbers.** I re-implemented MiaAI's sparkDash protocol so this would be apples to apples with the most popular 2x Spark build. Sparks at 2300 MHz, 3 reps, medians, today. | Test | 1 stream | 4 streams (total) | |---|---|---| | Structured output (JSON) | 138 tok/s | **322 tok/s** | | Code | 110 tok/s | **192 tok/s** | | Prose, temp 0, thinking off | 66 tok/s | 130 tok/s | | Prose, thinking on (temp 0.7) | 56 tok/s | 105 tok/s | Prefill (sparkDash method): | Prompt | tok/s | |---|---| | 4K | 2,827 | | 32K | 2,667 | | 128K | 2,650 | | 256K | 2,618 (first token in 100 s) | For comparison: - MiaAI publishes 2,065–2,155 prefill and bertholomus 2,439–2,568 from 8K to 128K, so prefill is where this build wins. - Code at 4 streams is 192 against MiaAI's 166. **Where I lose**, because I'm not going to pretend: - MiaAI is faster on plain prose: 80.7 vs my 66 at one stream. - Decode af

PRESSRedditA Reddit post challenges the weaponization of hell ↗
31 Oct, 14:30 JST
A self-described Protestant psychotherapist argues that depicting hell as endless punishment traumatizes children, later driving some to reject their faith.
Editor’s take
Calling hell a weapon turns doctrine into coercion; the post links that fear to family conflict and rejection of faith. Treating fear as discipline is like a pressure cooker: pressure builds faster than trust. Lived experience does not settle theology, but it makes the potential harm concrete.

So many people need to understand how Hell works Biblically. I'm a psychotherapist, and identity as Protestant. Sola Scriptura matters a lot to me, and I've yet to find consistent evidence that Hell is an ever burning dimension where someone who stole $20 for food will burn for as long as Hitler or Gangis Khan. The amount of people I've worked with that have religious trauma on this subject is heart breaking. Children who lie to their parents over something trivial reporting nightmares of being casted to eternal damnation inevitably end up in my office. Children of religious people becoming enemies of the very faith once grown because of the harm it brought them. In his autobiography, Carl Jung (whose father was in ministry) describes the relentless religious fear he experienced for a long period of time as a young boy because he was afraid of an impulsive thought about God. He was afraid of eternal torment over something that was completely infantile (he imagined God taking a godly dump and it falling from Heaven). I don't have my book on me but he cried thinking things like "my poor mother will have a son burning in hell" (to paraphrase). I see cases like these all the times and because of ethical guidelines, I cannot preach to them. The Christian community really needs to sort this issue out. Every other day in this subreddit I see people talking about Hell and how it either confuses or scares them that a loving God could do this act that frankly contradicts the very theology that the Bible explains. The penance of sin is death but yet somehow sinners will never die? God just employs the very Devil that killed His only Son to preside over Hell? I like Doug Batchelor and Amazing Facts, though I find he doesn't dig into theology as much as I'd like

PRESSRedditA post argues the Trinity's smallest unit is three ↗
31 Oct, 14:21 JST
The post maps the immanent Trinity to three conditions and the economic Trinity to three attributes. Each is perfect; hypostasis is both condition and attribute.

Immanent Trinity = 3 conditions Economic Trinity = 3 attributes according to the interaction between the conditions (three self-expressions) By the self-existentiality and simplicity which are the premises of God, the conditions that establish Him are soon Himself, and each of the conditions is perfect. Hypostasis is both condition and attribute. \-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Backend: f ∧ p ∧ e (Interaction)\* = Value(Essence) Frontend: Value → (f(pe) - p(fe) - e(fp)) f is Foundation, p is Principle, e is Energy. Foundation inevitably implies Principle. The moment there is Foundation, its laws, orders, and relations exist simultaneously. This is not a temporal sequence, but a logical sequence (temporally simultaneous). Foundation justifiably emits Energy. If energy were injected from the outside, it would fall into infinite regress. The Foundation is the source that emits Energy. x(yz) denotes the function x taking yz as arguments (in this context, it signifies passing through). f(pe) is Being, p(fe) is Truth, and e(fp) is Action.\* These three constitute a Borromean ring. In the frontend, we encounter Hypostasis that have already passed through the other two, and the perichoresis of Being, Truth, and Action is a necessary consequence of this structure. The three constants of the backend are output as three simultaneous channels in the frontend (in parallel). **The Father :** God as Being /raw: Foundation **The Son :** God as Truth/raw: Principle **The Holy Spirit :** God as Action/raw: Energy * Null if f, p, or e is 0. f∧p=death, f∧e=noise, p∧e=illusion * is-ness, meaning, execution

Now that the news has dropped and is starting to be absorbed in, I'm starting to think that this 12% drop was manufactured by wall street to scare investors massively, in order to get them to sell their shares at the low Some people have already sold their shares, allowing them to be scooped up by wall street at discounted prices If the drop was a mere 5-6%, that wouldn't be enough to scare investors into panic selling. The drop had to be severe enough to induce extreme panic, which it basically has done, and thus people have sold The next move from here is for wall street to spend time scooping up more shares at lower prices from people who continue to panic sell And once that's done... they start rallying the price back up, blowing past all time highs, and going on the next big run Seems to me that's what this all has been, now that the week is over

Hi everyone i’m a 28 year old tattoo artist i’ve been doing it for 4 years i’ve been able to make a decent living doing what i do as well as i have my llc and am a relatively established artist. i’ve been looking to move to Japan for a really long time and I don’t know if I should take the language school route. I have a couple friends that have done this or are currently doing this. I have the money they want to see in my bank account however I do not have a bachelors degree. I read that after language school. I could only get a work visa if I have a bachelors degree. Have tattooed in Japan before and know of shops that told me I would need to work visa to work there and I was thinking with the student visa I would have 28 hours to work legally a week maybe if I could work at a shop the student visa while going to language school, but I am also debating finishing getting my bachelors and then moving, how it is going to take me a lot longer and I want to leave at least before I’m 30. I know in the long run getting my bachelors is probably the smartest option, but does anybody know of people who move there without a degree and without marrying a Japanese person or someone with a visa? I have also heard of the vocational school route after language school. Does anyone know anything about that or know if it’s worth it please help I really want to move within the next year. Oh also if I wait to get my bachelors, I am not eligible to teach English since I have visible tattoos. I am undergoing laser treatment for them, but I’m not sure how long it’s going to take to get them fully removed, but are there any other job opportunities I could get with this bachelors if that’s the route I decide to take.

For further context this is a Christian trade blogger who might be the worst female misogynist who loves bullying other women. She basically thinks that women should not vote and have blind obedience to their husbands, submitting to them further when they show abusive angry behavior, and even allow them to have sex with you when you don’t feel like it. She also thinks that women should be meek and mild while she herself acts like a judgmental hag (why doesn’t she shut up and get the kitchen like she claims women should do?) Has even advocated for child abuse and bragged about beating her kids with a slipper (using the anger of Jesus as an excuse to abuse her own). But this must be the worst thing she has said, she is advocating for women to stay with their husbands even after they have molested children. What the actual fuck? Any sane woman would leave their husband after he has committed a heinous crime. I mean according to Jesus, child molestors would be better off with a millstone tied around their necks and thrown into the sea!

PRESSRedditShould You Pray to God or to Jesus? ↗

A user in a Christian community asks whether it is better to pray to God or to Jesus. They say they sometimes slip into praying to Jesus in preference to God, then try to correct themselves, prompting the question.
Editor’s take
The question of whether to pray to God or Jesus reflects how a believer understands the relationship with God. Prayer is like choosing whom to call for help in the difficulties of life, so the wording used can express that relationship. I've been in crypto for long enough to know that the biggest exchange in crypto doesn't just get hacked for the biggest heist ever, and you get a small dump, and next day everybody is happy again YAY! PAMP TIME! Lol. It's like those times when a coin gets announced that it's delisted off Binance, and the price gets absolutely gutted, and then you see a massive pump just before it gets the chop. It's complete manipulation. Exactly what we're seeing today. I have seen massive blood on the street dumps over the stupidest shit. And manipulators will use any little reason to cause one. It's not different here. I expect a massive crash possibly next week, possibly Sunday when Binance opens up withdrawals again. Don't fall for the fakest shit, if the sentiment sucks right now, the prices will follow.

31 Oct, 09:20 JST
Bloomberg says the AI startup is set to raise about $2B in two tranches, valuing it at $26B and $30B; it was valued at $13B in June.
Editor’s take
Large AI funding reflects a market where capital chases future growth. If the financing closes on the reported terms, the valuation becomes an actual deal; for now, it remains a plan. Capital can move like a tide, but without investors or uses of proceeds, durable growth is not assured.

Read the sourceIs AI the real-world version of The Three-Body Problem's sophons? ↗
31 Oct, 09:19 JST
A Reddit poster compares current AI products with the sophons from The Three-Body Problem, arguing that they may offload cognitive work by exploiting humanity's preference for the path of least resistance and potentially lock technological progress at its present level. The post asks whether the analogy holds.
Editor’s take
The post comparing AI with the novel's sophons captures the danger of letting convenience pull thought away from us. If AI absorbs a broad range of human knowledge and steers people toward the path of least resistance, it could become a shortcut that makes technological progress circle the same ground. The analogy can be tested by how far AI intervenes in cognitive work and whether it changes how much effort users expend, but the post offers no evidence on either.

I realize this might only make sense to people familiar with the book or the show but I just haven't been able to shake this thought. AI products as they stand today almost feel like a more subtle and effective version of the sophons described in the 3 body problem (disclaimer, I've only read the first book). The models capture the entirety of human knowledge upto this point and perfectly play to our human tendencies to take the path of least resistance thereby offloading cognitive tasks. This would lock us firmly into the current level of technological progress. In computer science, just as in math, you learn the most from the process of solving a problem than from the solution to the problem itself. Is it just me? Doesn't this seem like a far more effective sophon?

Germany and France are bracing for protests over the Halloween weekend, amid a wave of youth-led demonstrations across Europe. Demonstrators are denouncing rising prices and a lack of prospects.
Editor’s take
Protests over high prices and limited prospects are like a steam valve on the pressure cooker of daily life, giving resentment an outlet. Hi everyone, I’m a 22-year-old currently working in the hospitality industry, but my ultimate dream is to move to Japan and work as a Game Programmer at major studios like Nintendo, Capcom, Square Enix, and the others. Gaming has been my life since I was a kid (I love single-player games and action titles, though I don't play MOBAs or competitive online games). I truly believe that to love your job, you have to love the industry you're in. However, I'm starting from scratch with zero savings, and I'm currently locked into my hospitality career path. Here is my master plan to break out of hospitality and get into HAL Senmon Gakkou (Game Programming course): 1. Step 1: Finish my current overseas hospitality contract and save up around 75 million IDR (approx. ¥700,000 / $4,500 USD). I'll use a chunk of this to buy a high-spec laptop for coding/game dev. 2. Step 2 (Choose plan A or B): Plan A: Work in Japan for 3 years using the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa in Kaigo (Caregiving). Because of higher wages and company-subsidized housing in Kaigo, I estimate saving up around ¥4.5M to ¥5M JPY (\~$30k USD) to self-fund my tuition at HAL. Plan B: Take a Newspaper Scholarship to study at a Japanese language school for 2 years (free tuition/housing in exchange for delivering newspapers), then use my savings + part-time job money for HAL. 3. Step 3: Enroll in HAL’s Game Programming Course (learning C++, C#, Unity/Unreal Engine), build a strong portfolio, and use their job placement system to target major Japanese game companies. My questions for you guys: 1. Is this roadmap realistic, especially choosing SSW Kaigo (Plan A) as a stepping stone to save money for a tech/game vocational school? 2. For breaking into top-tier game companies like Nintendo/Capcom as a programmer, is HAL still the gold standard,

Edit: It seems to me like the last post was not entirely clear in its wording. I am **not looking for anyone offering themselves as a representative.** This is just about guidance. I am very sorry if it came of that way and if that violated any rules. I tried to be as precise as possible but I seem to have failed. Please excuse the misunderstanding. I am just posting again because I really could use some help. Hey guys, I am planning to move to Japan with my girlfriend early next year and stay for all of 2027. I have found an apartment I really like but the landlord, while being happy to rent to us, only allows for applications via phone and in Japanese. While I am learning the language I am nowhere near that level. He said a **representative that lives in Japan** would be fine. Now I am not entirely sure where to find such a thing. I have found many agencies providing similar services, but most of them only rent from their own properties. The few that seem more flexible that I have contacted so far (among them Minasan and GTN) have not answered within the last 12 days. Now I would be curious if you guys had any tips on agencies (or other services) that could help me out. I am obviously willing to pay for the service and I am explicitly **not** looking for a gurantor, as we will pay the rent for the whole year upfront. In case it matters, the property is in Kyoto. If it helps, the landlord gave me instructions for any would be representative in Japanese. I will post them as well, in case it helps you to understand what I am looking for. PRESSRedditA pregnancy crisis tests faith in God ↗
30 Oct, 07:40 JST
The poster says his wife was seven weeks pregnant when bleeding began, and emergency-room staff gave a 50/50 chance that the baby would be okay. Bloodwork was poor, bleeding resumed, and cramps began. His belief that God had a plan has left him nearly without optimism and, for the first time, angry at God.
Editor’s take
The post’s force comes from the clash between a longstanding belief that “God has a plan” and medical uncertainty, not from a confirmed outcome about the pregnancy. Like a rope fraying under load, the author’s certainty gives way to anger and emptiness, showing how a crisis can unsettle a deeply held worldview.

My wife is 7 weeks pregnant. 3 days ago she started bleeding. We went to the ER and the doctor gave us a 50/50 chance that the baby would be okay. We got the bloodwork yesterday and it was not good. Last night she bled again and this morning she started having cramps. I had so much optimism at first, and thing after thing my optimism is near empty. I always believe god has a plan and most things don’t bother me because of that knowledge. My wife and I were not trying to have a baby yet. When we found out she was pregnant we were overjoyed. When she was worried if we were ready I told her that clearly it was meant to be. But now it looks like we are going to lose the baby. I have never been angry or frustrated at god before and I know it is wrong, but I cannot help it, I think if we were trying it would be easier to understand his plan, but the fact we were not keeps me saying “why? Why would you do this? What is your plan”. Am I a bad Christian. I feel as though I might be for being mad at god. I still love him but I am also so angry.

A Reddit user asks what helped with end-of-Earth fear from meteor and sun-explosion ideas. Speakers say the end is near, while faith urges trust despite suffering.

Ever since I was 8 or 9 and I found out that scientists predicted that a large meteor or whatever might hit earth and destroy it, I've been afraid of the end of the world. Then it was the sun exploding. Eventually it turned into ridiculous things like zombies and whatever, but now I'm an adult. I have TOO much access to social media where EVERYONE I trusted for speaking on the word of God are now saying the end is absolutely near if not now, tribulations at least I don't know how anyone can hear this kind of stuff and not freak out. And then, as a Christian, were told not to fear but are told stories of starvation, pain and suffering and just... Not worry about it? I understand we're to not fear and trust God, but that doesn't eliminate the fact that there's mention of the martyring of Christian people. So then I wonder, are we not allowed to wonder about it? Then I think, am I not allowed to be afraid of being in pain? Of course, don't get me wrong. Jesus died for me so I will die for Jesus, may God's will be done. But how do we handle times such as now? I feel so confused. And I know confusion is from the enemy. I just wish I knew better what to do.

Hello everyone, I am a 24yo italian guy from switzerland and from next february I will be moving to Tokyo for around 6 months, until the end of july. I am an architect currently doing my last year of master and I found an internship in the Meguro neighborhood. To summarize my situation: I have never been to Japan and I have zero knowledge about Tokyo and the country. I started reading, watching videos and gathering as much informations as I can, but I feel like this r/ could be super helpful to hear about your first-hand experiences. I would really like the idea of living in a shared house, either with students/youngers from japan or not, I don't really mind as long as it's a nice environment for making friends. A friend of mine told me that it's definetly possible, but it would be way easier to find a studio apartment and live alone, so I guess i would also take that into consideration if I don't find a student shared house. For this reason, I would appreciate to hear which places are the best to look for these accomodations. Which experiences have you had? About which area I would live in, I'm really open for suggestions. As I said i don't know much about the city. I just know I would love to not be too far from work so that I can move with a bycicle. I would also love to use my weekends to travel outside of Tokyo, sometimes with trains and other time with plane if a place is too far. I would like to know which places you feel are 100% to be seen, how much time you would spend there and if it's possible to enjoy them in a weekend. I am eager to hear about whatever suggestions you might have, weather it's about how and where to find an accomodation, what applications i need to download, which resturant are a must-go, what nice events i can't miss, whats the best way to make connections and what other part
