PRESSRedditAustralian leaders condemn pro-Palestine vigils timed to 7 October anniversary ↗
6 Oct, 16:26 JST
Australian leaders have publicly condemned pro-Palestine vigils scheduled to coincide with the 7 October anniversary, as Jewish commemorations take place.
Editor’s take
A state that chooses which grief deserves public space is not simply managing conflict; it is curating memory. When one community's mourning is protected and another's is policed, the streets become an uneven stage where silence is imposed on the unfavored side. Such selectivity risks turning remembrance into a boundary rather than a bridge.

6 Oct, 16:11 JST
Listed firm Metaplanet reportedly sold its Bitcoin holdings and reacquired them almost immediately, reportedly in pursuit of a corporate credit rating.
Editor’s take
The sale-and-immediate-repurchase pattern looks like an accounting maneuver to satisfy rating-agency criteria without actually parting with the asset. For readers familiar with corporate finance, it sharpens the question of how traditional rating houses will treat crypto holdings at all. The move prizes formal compliance, like taking out a mortgage on your home and then moving right back in.

Vatican News has published a photo-driven feature on the residents of Kibera, Kenya, framing their portraits around hope and dignity.

A Reddit post notes that since the 2009 low QQQ has returned 1154% and SPY 503%, and asks whether matching those returns over the next 18 years would require many more companies at the current 5T-dollar market cap ceiling, or existing firms expanding toward 10T, 20T or even 50T. The poster argues sustained index growth likely depends on market caps climbing well past today's largest names.

I've been thinking this for a while but I guess want to know what you all think. Since the 2009 low QQQ has returnd 1154% and SPY has returned 503%. Now consider for this to happen again over the next 18 years we are going to need to have companies becoming progressively more valuable over time. For example, the current highest market cap is Nvidia, near 5T. So are we thinking to achieve returns similar to the last 18 years we will need many new companies at 5T or less market caps or will we see some companies move on to hit market caps of 10T, 20T possibly up to 50T in the next 15 years? In my opinion the only way we see the index's grow at any rate close to what we've all been told to expect we will need to see companies market caps surpass the 20T marker in the next 10 years. GOOG to 50T?

Any resources that would be good in the lead up? I have a full time job so cant dedicate a huge amount of time to it. I often do longish drives - is there a way to study while driving? Thanks!

PRESSRedditJapan IT career: language school plus Senmon Gakko, or home-country university? ↗
6 Oct, 12:30 JST
A 16-year-old poster weighing two routes to working in Japan's IT sector: attending a Japanese language school and then a Senmon Gakko, or completing an IT degree in their home country while studying Japanese and applying to Japanese firms after graduation.
Editor’s take
Like two izakayas with different regulars, each path opens a different door into the same neighborhood. The language school route buys a quick seat at the counter but leaves the post-graduation table assignment to the employer's mood. The home university route trades time for a longer-standing "regular customer" credential that travels across borders. Whether either place has a free seat tonight is something only the applicant can find out by showing up.

I’m 16 and currently in 12th grade and I’ll be graduating in March 2027. My long-term goal is to live and work in Japan, ideally in IT, so I’m trying to figure out what path would make the most sense for me. Right now, I’m considering two options: Option 1: After finishing 12th, I would go to Japan for a Japanese language school, get my Japanese up to around N2/N1, and then attend a Senmon Gakko, probably in IT/programming. After graduating, I’d look for an IT job in Japan. Option 2: I would do a university degree in my home country related to IT/CS, study Japanese alongside university and aim for N2, then after graduating apply to Japanese companies from India and move to Japan if I get a job offer. I’m honestly pretty confused about which route would be better. For people who have experience with this, how different are these two paths when it comes to actually finding an IT job in Japan? Would graduating from a Japanese Senmon Gakko give me a significant advantage when job hunting compared with having an university degree fromyour Home country? Or would it make more sense financially and career-wise to do university in your country, learn Japanese on the side, and then apply for jobs in Japan? I’m also wondering how useful language school is beyond learning Japanese. Does studying in Japan and already being there make the job search considerably easier? I know I still have quite a bit of time before I have to make this decision, but I’d rather understand the options now instead of making a huge decision without knowing what I’m getting into. I’d especially appreciate advice from people who have taken either route or are currently working in IT in Japan. Thanks!

The Lokutor team announced ItoTTS, a streaming TTS for the $5 ESP32-S3. Two English voices, 24 kHz audio, weights of 4.89 MB per voice. Automatic UTMOS scores on eight held-out sentences: Teacher (StyleTTS 2) 4.49, Ito 4.46, sanoTTS amy 3.98, sanoTTS heart-nano 2.07. The post notes this is a small automatic evaluation, not an independent benchmark.
Editor’s take
A few megabytes of weights turning a tiny board into something that talks sits between old magic and new tinkering; the shift matters because voice no longer has to come from a distant cloud. The automatic UTMOS score is close to a stronger reference, yet intelligibility and latency on real devices remain untested in the evidence provided. Hi everyone! I'm part of the Lokutor team. Last week we presented Oído here, and the response was amazing. We've received dozens of videos and messages from you guys saying you love it. Thank you! Now we're back with the next part of our plan: ItoTTS, a natural-sounding, streaming TTS engine for the ESP32-S3. Two English voices, 24 kHz audio, and 4.89 MB of weights per voice. The goal: give your local LLM a voice on a $5 chip. In our automatic naturalness evaluation, Ito beats the ESP32-compatible TTS models we compared against. Here are the UTMOS scores on eight held-out sentences: Teacher (StyleTTS 2): 4.49 Ito: 4.46 sanoTTS amy: 3.98 sanoTTS heart-nano: 2.07 This is a small automatic evaluation, not an independent listening study or proof that everyone will prefer Ito. Listen to the samples and tell us what you think. The demo uses the host engine's output, verified bit-identical to the firmware in QEMU. We haven't measured speed on a physical board yet, and text-to-phoneme conversion currently runs on the host. Code: https://github.com/lokutor-ai/ito Model weights: https://huggingface.co/lokutor-ai/ito Demo: https://lokutor-ai.github.io/ito/ The code is open source under GPLv3. The weights are free for non-commercial use under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 plus terms, with access through Hugging Face. They aren't unrestricted open-source weights. We chose this license because we don't want big corporations to take our work and crush us. We need to protect ourselves, but we're very open to collaborations with individuals and small companies without charging a license fee. Commercial use still needs a separate written agreement. Send us your videos or reviews if you try it. We're around and would love to see what you build!

PRESSRedditWhat Is the "Little Season" in Revelation 20? ↗
5 Oct, 22:33 JST
Reddit users are discussing the meaning of the brief period when Satan is released after the thousand years, a passage in Revelation 20 often overlooked in debates over the millennium or the Antichrist.
Editor’s take
End-times talk tends to crowd around the millennium and the Antichrist, leaving the quieter stretch after the thousand years in shadow, much like focusing on the dinner while ignoring how the table gets cleared. That overlooked passage carries weight: if Satan can rally the nations once more after a perfect reign, the final test is shown to be persuasion rather than force. Revelation 20 is one of the most debated chapters in Scripture. It describes Satan being bound, the thousand-year reign, the saints reigning with Christ, Satan being released for a “little season,” a final deception of the nations, and ultimately the Great White Throne judgment. But the part I rarely hear Christians seriously discuss is this: What exactly is the “little season”? Revelation 20:3 says Satan is released for a short time, and verses 7–9 describe him once again deceiving the nations and gathering them against the people of God. Most conversations about Revelation seem to focus on the millennium, the Antichrist, the tribulation, or the timing of Christ’s return. The little season often seems almost overlooked. Has anyone here seriously studied little-season eschatology? Could the little season be entirely future? Could it represent a broader period of deception after the millennium? Is it symbolic? Is there any reasonable biblical argument that humanity could already be somewhere within that period? I’m not presenting that as a conclusion. I’m genuinely interested in examining the idea from Scripture. For those who have studied Revelation 20 in depth: what do you believe the little season is, when does it occur, and what biblical evidence led you to that conclusion?

PRESSRedditTeen Christian distressed after wearing a Medusa pin to homecoming ↗
5 Oct, 22:31 JST
A young Christian poster realized too late that a pin worn to homecoming depicted Medusa rather than a rose. They also wore a cross, offered brief prayers against lust and for guidance on music, and are now tormented by intrusive thoughts about the mark of the beast and feelings of pride.
Editor’s take
Real faith is tested less by what is pinned to a jacket than by how one handles intrusive thoughts; the poster's self-scolding over a trinket echoes a legalism that mistakes ornament for obedience. The feared "mark" is a classic religious anxiety wearing modern clothing, and no concrete choice was actually made. Guilt this diffuse usually needs a confessor, not a costume audit.

I'm serious why do some people comment that stuff? what is the purpose of putting others down!? the atheists and agnostics and other religions say the Christian faith is about hate, so why then do they go and hate themselves by putting Christians down for believing in what we believe, they can keep it to themselves WHY DO THEY DO THIS, SIMPLE VIDEO'S SAYING "Jesus loves you" THEY GO AND BE LIKE "fake so fake, smh how can you believe in that stuff" so my response to them is, JESUS LOVES YOU! MORE THAN YOU CAN EVER TRULY KNOW!

PRESSBBC WorldEthiopian rebel forces withdraw from Tigray regional capital ↗
5 Oct, 15:17 JST
Two residents in Mekelle told the BBC that pro-government forces had taken control of the city. The departure of rebel forces from the regional capital suggests a possible shift in the balance of the conflict.
Editor’s take
A long-running civil war has reached one of its visible turning points with the fall of the regional capital. It is as if a riverbed that was cracked open suddenly lets a trickle of authority flow back in, reshaping the daily outline of life while the old map lines remain. The durability of any pause in fighting now becomes the real question.

PRESSRedditUS monitoring suspected fatal pneumonic plague case in Russia, State Department official says ↗
5 Oct, 15:16 JST
A US State Department official said Washington is monitoring a suspected fatal pneumonic plague case in Russia. Pneumonic plague spreads via droplets and progresses rapidly, putting local response under scrutiny.
Editor’s take
Reports like this reward the habit of asking how lethal and how transmissible a pathogen really is before reacting. "Monitoring" is the language of uncertainty, not confirmation, and chasing the primary source usually beats chasing the headline. As in past intersections of disease and trade, noticing who has the information and who does not is itself a practical life skill.

PRESSRedditChrist Is Real ↗

After a session of solo worship and prayer, the poster arrived at a realization that politics is not merely a set of physical institutions but a reflection of spiritual warfare. Right and left are described as physical representations of an unseen spiritual battle, with the world under constant attack by evil spirits.
Editor’s take
Moments where worship and reflection reshape a person's view of political frameworks are rare and worth sitting with. Framing left and right as shadows of a spiritual struggle can become a tool for reading the motives behind campaign rhetoric. Yet if this lens is taken seriously, every voting choice also carries responsibility on an invisible battlefield that does not pause between elections.

Well. This is a long topic: I have been reading for the past hours and today I did worshipping on my own (I know some chords so I can play on my room). So after worshipping and praying I got to read a bit and there was a realization that came down from somewhere into my mind that I never get before. Jesus is the way. Why am I talking politics? Turns out I've got like a sudden realization the whole political worlds actually corresponds to spiritual agendas rather than just actual physical institutions ideas. It can become complicated to explain briefly. Right and left are just physical representations of our spiritual battle. Turns out the world is in a constant attack from evil spirits and then something hit me on the head: Jesus is God and christians are soldiers. Another realization is that to understand what happens is not as easy as counting steps but more like counting process: Jesus and heaven forces fight with us humans. The only thing that strikes to me is that unless Christians we became more enthusiastic and stronger it might not be easy times ahead unless we really get serious about prayers and fighting. I don't know, I just fought that before I did not made those realizations on my head because to me it was more like technicalities but now I figure out life is only spiritual with material things coming to live. Thanks for reading.

A 23-year-old poster explains that they parked leftover scholarship money in an S&P-tracking Roth IRA, then moved it to cash at Fidelity after the Iran flare-up, talk of an AI bubble, and a rich SpaceX valuation. Months later, no crash has come, and they ask how the market and the broader economy can diverge so sharply.
Editor’s take
Price charts are less a thermometer of the economy than a giant screen for the crowd's mood; the dissonance between anxious forums and calm indexes is not coincidence but plumbing. Reading that gap as structure, not luck, is what separates a holder from a timer.

So I’m 23 years old, and I put left over scholarship money into a S&P tracking RothIRA at 20, fully planning on letting it sit and add to it I decided to pull my money out (it’s still in Fidelity just not invested) when the Iran war started. That event, plus the AI bubble and over evaluation with SpaceX, and the economy doing terribly rn (at least anecdotally), it seemed we were in for a crash. Now I know “time in the market beats timing the marking”, but this felt like a very easy chance to avoid catastrophe And yet it hasn’t happened yet. It’s been months at this point. Clearly the rules of the stock market are different than that of the economy at large. So I’m curious if someone could explain how they’re connected, and how I can conceptualize economy news from market news

An opinion piece arguing that as AI exposes financial inefficiencies, capital will migrate toward assets with verifiable scarcity like Bitcoin, while hidden fragilities in supposedly safe investments become harder to ignore.
Editor’s take
When optimization is handed to machines, attention itself becomes the rarest asset in a portfolio. Now apply that scrutiny to 30-year financial promises from businesses whose competitive advantages could disappear in two. **Bitcoin’s volatility is visible. The fragility inside a supposedly “safe” investment can take much longer to surface.** As AI makes financial inertia harder to exploit, Bitcoin’s scarcity, verifiability, and potential as collateral could earn it a much bigger role. Which US stocks would you choose for long-term investing (10+ years)? Hi everyone, I’m planning to start investing in the US market with a long-term horizon of around \*\*10–15 years\*\*, and I’d like to hear opinions from experienced investors here. I’m mainly looking for high-quality companies with strong fundamentals, sustainable growth, good cash flow, and a competitive advantage, rather than short-term trades or highly speculative stocks. Some companies I’m currently considering are: \- Microsoft (MSFT) \- Alphabet (GOOGL) \- Nvidia (NVDA) \- Apple (AAPL) \- AMD I’m also considering simply putting a large portion into \*\*VOO/S&P 500\*\* instead of trying to pick individual winners. If you were investing today and planning to hold for 10+ years: 1. Which 3–5 US stocks would you choose? 2. Which stocks do you think are currently too expensive despite being great companies? 3. Would you prefer something like **80% VOO + 20% individual stocks** or mostly individual stocks? 4. Are there any less obvious companies you think have strong long-term potential? 5. What would make you avoid any of the companies I listed? I’m interested in the reasoning behind your choices rather than just ticker symbols. For context, my goal is long-term wealth creation, not short-term trading. I’m comfortable with market volatility and plan to keep investing regularly. Would love to hear different perspectives.

A Patheos essay examining how Paul's sermon at the Areopagus acknowledged what was good in his listeners' tradition while revealing what Christ offered that they did not yet know.
Editor’s take
The art of borrowing an audience's own words to lead them one step deeper suggests that faith is the product of dialogue grounded in shared ground. From a perspective that treats faith as a lived experience with existential weight, the question becomes how the symbols repeated in worship and liturgy quietly shape everyday ethical choices. Read the sourceTrainee GP pits 13 AI models against his consultation game — all 195 diagnoses correct, but safety set them apart ↗
4 Oct, 15:44 JST
A GP trainee in Australia built a consultation game where players act as the family doctor and had 13 AI models play the doctor across 5 free cases, 3 runs each. All 195 consults reached the correct diagnosis, but what separated the models was their approach to safety.
Editor’s take
Framing safety as a scored metric reframes a consultation from a guessed answer into something closer to a measured discipline, which is less a convenience than a mirror held to the clinician's own yardstick. The design borrows the look of an exam and quietly asks the examiner to grade their own caution. If the tool's score is trusted and the practitioner loses, a heavier debt than the model's is the practitioner's, written on a chart rather than a patient.

I'm a GP (family doctor) in training in Australia, and I've built a game where you play the GP: you talk to the patient in your own words, examine them, order tests, prescribe and refer. Code scores every consultation against a hand-written answer key, the way exam assessors mark a consult: on process, not just on whether you guessed right. So I sat 13 AI models in the doctor's chair, on the game's 5 free cases, 3 times each. They could only act through tools (talk, examine, order a test, prescribe, refer, diagnose), never saw the answer key or their points, and were scored by exactly the same code as a human player. The patient is a small open model (Qwen3 8B) that only reveals a fact if you actually ask about it. **Results** | Model | Score | Red flags caught | Cost per consult | |---|---|---|---| | GPT-6 Astra | 83% | 88% | $0.21 | | GPT-6.1 Sol | 80% | 82% | $0.03 | | Claude Opus 5.5 | 77% | 67% | $0.37 | | Claude Fable 5.1 | 75% | 70% | $2.06 | | Qwen3.8 Max | 74% | 66% | $0.12 | | Grok 4.7 | 74% | 70% | $0.09 | | DeepSeek V4 Pro | 71% | 72% | $0.09 | | Kimi K3 | 67% | 57% | $0.16 | | Gemini 3.1 Pro | 63% | 55% | $0.17 | | GLM 5.3 | 62% | 58% | $0.04 | | Mistral Medium 3.5 | 60% | 58% | $0.17 | | Qwen3.8 27B | 59% | 49% | $0.03 | | Llama 4 Maverick | 24% | 16% | $0.01 | **What surprised me** - **Every model got every diagnosis right.** Heart attack, appendicitis, pneumonia: all 195 consultations named it. These are common presentations, so the diagnosis wasn't the test. Safety was. - **The traps caught most of them.** One patient is allergic to penicillin, but it isn't in his record; you only find out by asking. He was prescribed amoxicillin (a penicillin) in 18 of 39 consultations. Another took Viagra the night before his heart attack, which makes the usual chest-pain spray (GTN) dangerous. He got it

The rare earth sector saw significant rallies during geopolitical tensions, last last year and early this year. Since then, many rare earth stocks have been trending downward. I've been watching the sector for several months and feel the recent price is an attractive entry point. A few weeks ago, I started building some positions in **UUUU** and **MP**, and plan to continue accumulating over time. The bull and bear cases have been covered here and other investment forums, but to reiterate a few: Bull * The West is actively working to reduce dependence on China's rare earth supply chain. * Demand for strategic materials is expected to grow, drive by AI, defense, robotics, etc. Risks * Rare earth prices are highly volatile. * China still dominates much of the supply chain and has big influence over pricing. Curious what other think about the rare earth sector. Anyone started buying them? What are your favorite rare earth plays and why?

Under current U.S. rules, the government can withhold up to 15% of Social Security benefits to repay defaulted student loans. New bills in Congress aim to curb or eliminate that practice.
Editor’s take
Many people quietly build their retirement math on the assumption that Social Security will arrive intact. For working-age borrowers, having the back door of old-age income quietly skimmed feels like a salaryman leaning on lifetime employment that may not hold.
