PRESSRedditSSW to University Path: An 18-Year-Old From Serbia Weighs Options ↗
8 Oct, 14:57 JST
An 18-year-old Reddit user in Serbia, finishing medical secondary education, is asking whether to pursue Japan's Specified Skilled Worker visa or aim for university, given that most scholarships including MEXT are unavailable due to citizenship and financial constraints.
Editor’s take
An eighteen-year-old forced to choose between labor and study because institutional pathways are closed exposes how the supposed openness of global mobility still depends on documents and borders. The clean separation between "worker" and "student" exists mainly on paper; in practice, a young person improvises between them. Whether a Specified Skilled Worker status can later convert into a degree track remains an open empirical question.

Hi! I'm 18 y.o currently living in Serbia. I'm finishing medical school (specialized middle education, not bachelors) and I've been thinking about what to do next. Sadly I have very tough financial state and due to some problems regarding citizenships, paper stuff, politics and etc almost all of the scholarship options are closed for me (including mext) and the university payments are tough. i will be able to work at the pharmacy after finishing the medschool but the payment is so low that there's no way that i will be able to save for the uni. also my family thinks about moving to Philippines and i want to be able to see them at least sometimes. the SSW option seems fine by itself except I'm not sure if I won't become disabled after doing such work for a very long time since i have health issues. and that may sound childish but i want to get a higher education and a better job. so i wonder if i can theoretically work on SSW for a few years, save up money for uni, get a bachelors and then search for a job within japan? how possible would that be?

A Reddit user, already on Fidelity and Robinhood, is looking for advice on how to access the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX, formerly NES) for portfolio diversification.
Editor’s take
This is a clear case where jurisdictional regulation becomes the investor's personal menu. What looks like a simple account-opening task is actually a wall built out of licensing and cross-border rules. 8 Oct, 11:59 JST
Shares of BULL fell about 19% after a U.S. House committee report on Webull. The original poster argues the report lacks internal consistency: the committee had been silent for nearly two years after first writing to Webull in December 2024; Webull's annual report to the SEC stated no further requests had come in over 20 months; and CNBC received the findings exclusively before release, with the stock already down about 29% pre-market.
Editor’s take
Two simple facts, a long silence and a media-first rollout, are enough to cast doubt on the report's credibility. It resembles a teacher who disappears for months and then hands out a one-sided notice on the last day of term. Whether the committee's intent is accountability or stagecraft now depends on how Webull responds to any follow-up request.

Credit: @MarcelLarsen\_ on X $BULL dropped 19% today on a House committee report. Before you panic, read what's actually in it, because a lot of it doesn't add up. 1) The committee went quiet for almost two years. It first wrote to Webull in December 2024. Webull's annual report, filed in April, already told the SEC it hadn't received any further requests from the committee in more than a year. Webull says it heard nothing for 20+ months and was never asked to clarify anything before the report came out. 2) It went to CNBC first. The committee shared its findings exclusively with a TV network before the report was released, and the stock was down \~29% before the opening bell. Reuters said that morning it couldn't independently verify CNBC's report. 3) None of this is new. Webull went public in April 2025, four months after the committee's first letter, and its China R&D subsidiary, headcount included, has been in every annual report it has filed with the SEC since. You can't mask something you print in your 20-F. 4) It's all "may" and "could." Systems that may be exposed, data that could be accessed. None of the coverage cites a single actual case of Beijing touching a US customer's data. Webull's filings say US customer data sits on US servers and can't leave the US or be accessed by non-US staff without US permission and oversight. 5) It started on the wrong foot. The committee's December 2024 letter, the one that kicked this off, called Webull Financial LLC a "PRC company." Webull Financial is a US broker dealer registered with the SEC. What the report doesn't do: ban anything or fine anyone. It's a findings report. No SEC, FINRA or Treasury action has been announced. What hasn't changed: Webull is headquartered in St. Petersburg, Florida, and it's the Tampa Bay Rays' first ever jersey p

Megumi Akiyama, who studied classical ballet in childhood, cheerleading in university, and later jazz and hip-hop, now teaches cheer dance and leads “gospel dance” lessons.
Editor’s take
Worship through movement quietly redraws the outline of traditional church liturgy. Teaching God’s love through music and steps refreshes faith closer to bodily memory than to theology. Picture outdoor radio exercises rewritten as church practice, and a familiar street corner becomes a small sanctuary. A UNHCR report on its 2019 shelter need assessment in Cox's Bazar Rohingya refugee camps, documenting the shift from emergency shelter kits to upgrade kits and the need for targeted repair and replacement assistance.

The pivot from emergency distribution to maintenance and repair reframes a humanitarian camp as a place meant to be inhabited long-term, much as a rental becomes a home only after the landlord stops treating it as temporary. When a faith is handled as inherited artifact rather than as text one opens and wrestles with, the religion quietly tilts from institution toward private labor. Editor’s take
Infrastructure rarely becomes headline news on day one. Whitelabel quietly compresses months of plumbing into a contract, so the brand on top borrows the credibility of the layer beneath it, and end users struggle to tell who is actually on the hook when something breaks. A lone figure in a grand basilica, offering faith as a box of questions rather than answers, runs counter to the marketplace logic that sells quick futures. A post on r/Christianity sparked early discussion arguing the empty tomb, not the cross, is the true foundation of Christian hope. The author notes thousands were crucified, but only one rolled away the stone, and suggests the resurrection makes the atonement meaningful. The thread was prompted by an ad for an "empty tomb necklace."

Choosing a sacred symbol is as domestic as choosing what to hang above the sofa. But if the symbol is taken as a declaration that a historical resurrection occurred, then the choice is no longer aesthetic; it asserts a factual claim that requires evidence, not jewelry.

Why do people wear a cross? Paul literally says if Jesus didnt rise our faith is worthless. so why is the cross the symbol for Christians? Thousands died on it, but only one rolled the stone away, which feels like everything hinges on that event alone. That is our hope! I know the cross + Jesus took our sins, but ultimately only if the resurrection happened does that matter. The only reason i thought of this was because of an ad I saw about an "empty tomb necklace" so credit to ya'll for making me think haha. Thoughts?

The Reddit post notes a steady stream of commentary claiming that a company approaching roughly six trillion dollars means the market has lost its mind. The author argues this reaction has been repeated throughout stock-market history, citing the public reaction to the first one-trillion-dollar company and earlier milestones. The piece frames each "impossible" ceiling as something the market eventually normalizes.
Editor’s take
Old market-cap ceilings are like a longtime resident insisting the neighborhood was livelier before the new high-rise went up; the skyline keeps rewriting the standards, so today's "impossible" often becomes tomorrow's baseline. Milestones treated as limits today tend to be remembered as waypoints once the next one arrives.

I keep seeing posts acting like a company approaching $6 trillion automatically means the market has lost its mind. I think people seriously underestimate how often this same argument has repeated throughout stock-market history. Imagine going into a room full of professional analysts in 2000 and telling them that within 18 years we’d have our first $1 trillion public company, and not long after that we’d be talking about companies approaching $6 trillion. Most people probably would’ve thought you were insane. Go back another decade or two and the numbers become even more ridiculous from their perspective. Yet every time the market reaches one of these supposedly impossible milestones, people eventually accept it as normal and move their imaginary ceiling higher. There’s also a basic mathematical point that gets overlooked. Market caps compound in percentages, not in neat trillion-dollar increments. Going from $1T to $2T requires a 100% gain. $2T to $3T requires 50%. $3T to $4T requires 33%. $4T to $5T requires 25%. $5T to $6T requires only 20%. At $10T, adding another trillion requires only a 10% increase. So as companies become larger, crossing each additional trillion-dollar milestone actually requires a smaller percentage move. A $1 trillion increase sounds enormous, but eventually it can represent a fairly normal year of stock appreciation. We’re also not talking about a bunch of random companies suddenly becoming worth trillions. The companies occupying this range have generally spent years or decades dominating enormous industries, building global businesses, ecosystems, infrastructure, intellectual property and massive earnings bases. None of this means a $5T or $6T company is automatically fairly valued. NVIDIA, Apple, Microsoft or anyone else can absolutely become overvalued. But that’s an ar

From a modern secular humanist angle, the shift away from 'scale equals progress' in AI research is worth noting. 6 Oct, 18:40 JST
The author published a Chrome extension that runs locally via WebGPU with no server, no API key, and no account. It judges each video title with a small ONNX model, hides 11 content categories, accepts natural-language rules, can hide Shorts, and checks selected text for prompt injection via the right-click menu. After the initial download it works offline.
Editor’s take
This tool shows that even without infrastructure a person can reclaim editorial control over what they watch. It resembles sewing your own curtains: imperfect, but the act of refusing to outsource taste is itself the point. Yet the model's filtering criteria are opaque, and with no third party able to audit its choices it could quietly become an unseen gatekeeper over what reaches the viewer.

My YouTube feed was mostly songs, pranks and celebrity clips, so I built a filter that judges each video title with a small decision model running inside Chrome. Nothing is sent anywhere: no server, no API key, no account, and after one download it works offline. What it does \- Hides the kinds of video you choose (11 kinds: music, gaming, comedy, vlogs, news, how-tos, and so on), or follows a rule you write: "Hide videos about crypto", "Show only videos about cooking" \- Hides Shorts with one switch \- Bonus: select any text, right-click, and check it for prompt injection with the same model How it runs \- The model is opendecider-nano (ONNX), loaded through ONNX Runtime Web in an offscreen document \- fp16 on WebGPU (755 MiB download), q8 on WASM without a GPU (569 MiB) \- 40 video titles: 1.1 s on WebGPU, about 15 s on CPU (M4 Max). About 3 GiB of RAM while loaded; it unloads after 10 idle minutes \- The weights are pinned by revision and SHA-256. The only network requests are to Hugging Face for those files How well it works \- On 400 YouTube videos, with the creator's category as the label, rules like "hide music", "hide gaming" and "only news" score 0.934 balanced accuracy on average \- Sorting videos into the 11 kinds is harder: 0.780. Expect a few comedy and talk-show clips to get through the Focus preset \- Only evaluated on English titles. A wildfire broke out in Lura National Park, Municipality of Dibër, Albania. Spreading through pastureland and pine forest under high fuel load and low humidity, it triggered ground and aerial response plus firebreaks to shield nearby villages.

The episode shows how a landscape under stress becomes legible only when coordinated observation arrives on site. A question posted on r/Christianity that lays out the tension between Christian caution toward Harry Potter's magic and witchcraft themes and the poster's own enthusiasm for the gender-swapped Draco fan art known as the Malfoid trend.
Editor’s take
This is a question about the boundary between worship and play, asking whether the act of reimagining a character becomes a test of devotion. Think of it like decorating a spare room: a single poster changes nothing, but fill every wall and the room stops feeling like home. The longer question is whether the imagination is being trained toward praise or toward counterfeit wonders.

What do Christians think of the Harry Potter series, especially the current Malfoid trend with the gender-swapped Draco fan art and the whole tsundere-style take on the character? I know some Christians are cautious about Harry Potter because of the magic and witchcraft themes, but personally, I’m fine with enjoying it as fiction. And honestly I think the recent Malfoid trend is really fun and strangely special.

Germany has detained a former intelligence chief on espionage allegations. Few details about the case or the accused have been disclosed so far.
Editor’s take
A young democracy discovering rot inside its own surveillance apparatus resembles discovering mold on bread you baked this morning: the alarm is not about flavor but about the recipe. The case will be remembered less for any single betrayal than for what it reveals about how thin the line is between secrecy and narrative scholarship in modern states. If the judiciary treats a former interior headleniently, cynicism about institutions will deepen; if it prosecutes firmly, Germany resets its credibility at considerable cost to its security establishment.

Read the sourceWhat Makes Human Oversight Meaningful in AI-Assisted Decisions? ↗
6 Oct, 17:25 JST
A discussion examines the gap between formally signing off on an AI recommendation and actually exercising judgment. The Pentagon's Agent Network is cited as a case where AI scans intelligence and operational systems, raising questions about whether reviewers can meaningfully push back before approval.
Editor’s take
The boundary between a rubber stamp and considered judgment resembles the difference between a cashier scanning barcodes and a navigator reading a map. If approvers are swept along by the system's pace, their signatures locate responsibility without locating the decision itself. Whether a real capacity to refuse survives the design is the scale on which the weight of the word oversight is measured.

A human approves an AI recommendation. What does that approval actually establish? It establishes that a person authorized the decision. Whether they exercised real judgment depends on what they could actually do before signing off. AI can process information no person could review unaided, and in time-sensitive situations, faster analysis can prevent harm. Requiring someone to manually repeat every step would often defeat the point of using the system at all. But there's a real difference between being assisted by a system and being unable to meaningfully push back on it. The Pentagon's Agent Network initiative provides a useful case. According to its announcement, AI agents will scan intelligence and operational systems and present commanders with options within seconds. The Department says the system will not autonomously select or strike targets. That distinction matters, right? The announcement alone, however, does not establish how commanders will examine uncertainty, review alternatives or challenge a recommendation. If a system ranks or filters options, what must remain visible to the person responsible for the decision? And how much time and authority must they retain to reconsider it? That's the part worth examining: not whether a human is "in the loop," but what the loop actually gives them room to do. I'd test meaningful oversight against three things: Can the reviewer understand the basis for the recommendation and its major uncertainties? Can they challenge the assumptions behind it, request alternatives or bring in information the system didn't have? Can they pause or reject the action, with enough authority and enough time for that to actually count? These should scale with the stakes. A reversible, low-consequence decision doesn't need the same scrutiny as a medical or military one. In

A personal blog citing Romans 10:9-10, urging readers to confess faith verbally and place inward belief as the path to being saved.
Editor’s take
Framing religious confession as a pure real-world device is close to a naive equivalence in which speech alone settles the account of the world. A circuit that prioritizes utterance over interior life risks treating faith the way a search box treats keywords. If salvation is fixed the moment a person confesses, that circuit sits one step away from typing a query into a bar.

These are powerful verses that only few know about. Romans 10:9-10 Amplified Bible: > **because if you acknowledge and *confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord* [recognizing His power, authority, and majesty as God], and *believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead*, you will be saved. For with the heart a person believes [in Christ as Savior] resulting in his justification [that is, being made righteous—being freed of the guilt of sin and made acceptable to God]; and with the mouth he acknowledges and confesses [his faith openly], resulting in and confirming [his] salvation.** So what's stopping you making that confession? If JESUS appeared to you in a dream, would you believe then? What's it going to take? PRESSRedditCatholic or Protestant? A Returning Christian Weighs the Choice ↗
6 Oct, 16:29 JST
A poster raised Protestant, long an atheist, and recently returned to Christianity is torn between Catholicism and Protestantism. They appreciate what they see as Catholic continuity with the early Church but still have questions about Catholic doctrine, especially the veneration of Mary.
Editor’s take
Picking a church is like choosing a landlord: the warmth of the welcome matters less than the fine print of the lease, and doctrine is the fine print. The poster treats Marian devotion as a side question, which signals that their criteria are still unformed, because that issue is precisely where the two traditions diverge on authority and tradition. A decision made while shelving the harder question is likely to reopen later. Treat the silence around Mary as the real test, not a footnote.

Hello everyone! I have a question that has been on my mind for quite some time. I was raised in a Protestant family, then became an atheist for many years, and a few months ago I returned to Christianity. Only recently have I started studying the different Christian traditions more seriously, and I am quite undecided between Catholicism and Protestantism. On the one hand, I feel that Catholicism has preserved many elements of the early Church, and I am interested in understanding the traditions of the first Christians better. However, there are still some things in Catholic doctrine that I have questions about. One of them is the way Mary, the mother of Jesus, is venerated in Catholicism. Unlike some of the other issues, I actually have some sympathy for the idea of giving Mary a greater role of honour and devotion than what I normally see in Protestantism. I can understand why Catholics give her so much importance, although I still have some doubts about how far that devotion should go and what exactly the biblical basis is for some Marian practices. I do not believe that Mary is literally a “female version of God” (apologies if I got this part wrong), but I find it easier to accept the importance Catholicism gives her than some of the other Catholic doctrines. Another issue is the papacy. I can understand the historical importance of the early bishops of Rome. However, I find it difficult to accept that the Pope has such a high level of authority within the Church today. To me, Jesus is the leader and head of the Church, and I struggle when certain roles, titles, prayers, or forms of authority seem to be attributed to someone other than Christ. I have heard the Catholic argument that Jesus remains the true head of the Church, while the Pope exercises a form of earthly leadership as Peter’s successor. Even
