Are there Japanese tests other than the JLPT for a student visa? ↗

18 Oct, 11:15 JST

Expecting an N5 pass in January 2027 but the next sitting in August, the poster asks which N5-level tests authorities and schools accept for a student visa.

Editor’s take

When a language requirement rests on a single test, the calendar rather than the learner sets the pace. It is like a ticket window that opens only twice a year. Whether a second accepted test actually changes outcomes is a claim that visa records can test.

But i have not yet completed N5, and with my current trajectory I’ll be able to pass N5 around January of 2027. However i would have to wait for the next N5 exam in August. Is there another test i could take that would be the equivalent to N5 that japanese immigration and language schools would accept for a student visa?

Unaminer: A Blockchain Game Where Humans Solve Hashes by Hand ↗

18 Oct, 09:44 JST

Players pick eight rocks to form a real block header's nonce; the server double-hashes it. More leading zeros mean deeper digging, and blueprints give energy.

Editor’s take

The game makes crypto's complexity a tactile puzzle and turns portfolio-watching into play. A shared digging world frames mining as a collective riddle, but gains and game progress share one screen, blurring play and investment. That blur can make a market ruled by luck and code feel hand-movable.

r/CryptoCurrency · u/mihkelbrocast · 1 points · 0 comments · MEME I know everyone is tired of AI flop, but I wanted to just make my idea come true and offer some fun to people who like some puzzles and like to click stuff while watching their portfolios grow. Yes, i built a game using AI coding to get you solving hashes by hand. Because why not. It’s called **Unaminer**. You pick 8 rocks, and their letters become the nonce of a real block header. The server hashes it with double SHA-256, and the more leading zeros your hash has, the deeper you dig. To get you actually think - you need to solve blueprints to get energy or....wait for a while and try again. Everyone digs in the same shared world, and the whole idea is simple: **can anyone find the hash that reaches the core?** You can create teams to do it with your friends. You can do it on guest account (no log in) or create account (no private data asked). You can see what level hash your team solved. Also you can see how the world is doing and what's the current leaderboard (previous worlds etc). Every time when someone gets the hash, the world resets to a new one...and we all start again. Right now the difficulty is set to 8 bits for testing reasons. There are some...plans in the future. I am just testing it right now and if there is anyone interested, beta invite: [https://beta.unaminer.com/?invite=319XZ6QYWFAX](https://beta.unaminer.com/?invite=319XZ6QYWFAX) (for creating a team or joining one, please first create account, as guest accounts are reset after 5min when closing tab on your browser). PS! There is only one beta invite link and its this one here. There is a feedback button in the game or just leave feedback here. I hope admins allow it as it's not asking any funds at this moment and won't have anything other than "support and get a lame miner badge" in the future aswell. Or if I'm completely going in wr

Retired admiral talks military integrity and voter protection on podcast ↗

18 Oct, 07:08 JST

Rear Adm. Michael E. Smith (ret.), head of National Security Leaders for America, discusses military integrity and voter protection on the show.

Editor’s take

Military integrity and voter protection look like separate topics, yet both come down to the same question of who keeps watch. A family move to Tokyo raises the question of child-care support ↗

18 Oct, 05:37 JST

In r/movingtojapan, a parent offered a one-year Tokyo assignment with family fears losing both families’ child-care support despite covered costs and visas.

Editor’s take

The issue is not the assignment’s length or visa category but whether child care can move from nearby family to an employer’s system. It is like restretching a familiar daily-life web in a new place; the strain never shows in salary or allowances. Covered costs do not write isolation into the contract.

I’ve also traveled to Tokyo for work several times, my wife and I traveled several years ago for a few weeks for holiday. I’ve been asked to take a 1 year assignment with my family in Tokyo for work. I have a feeling 1 year will turn to two, most of the companies assignments last several years. The company covers our living expenses, travel, visa, tax situation, yada yada. What I’m most concerned about is our 1 year old son and my wife, who is a SAHM. We live minutes from both of our families, who give us a lot of support with the baby. We’re also used to living in the “country” with lots of open space and a large home. I’ve been researching relentlessly for weeks, watching videos, reading blogs, trawling Reddit, searching for daycares and apartments, just trying to get the full idea. Is it going to be too much for us? Will we be able to make friends with other parents? How about finding part time daycare? We have been planning to send him for 2 days a week mostly for socialization, so I’m concerned about being able to do that while living in Tokyo.

AI deployment questions shift from 'is it safe' to 'cost per task and who signs off' ↗

14 Oct, 11:42 JST

A builder of revenue-cycle-management agents for hospitals says the debate moved from April's "can an agent do this safely" to "what does each task cost and who signs off on errors," and answers with data from his own project. Connecting the model, he says, is the fastest step.

Kael wrote about this · 2026-09-12 ↗

Saying that connecting the model is the fastest step is like saying the wiring is the fastest part of a household appliance. Draft rules for digitalised administrative procedures open for comment until 11 Nov ↗

14 Oct, 11:42 JST

A draft ordinance amending the enforcement rules of the law on promoting administrative procedures through information and communications technology is open for public comment on e-Gov. The draft was posted and comments opened on 13 October 2026, with a deadline of 11 November 2026 at 9:30. A believer asks for guidance as prayer starts to feel empty ↗

A Reddit post asks what James 4:14 means: is brevity a reason not to worry? ↗

14 Oct, 11:24 JST

A poster in r/Christianity quotes James 4:14 — "a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes" — and asks whether it means we should not worry.

Editor’s take

Reading "life is a mist" as a reason to stop worrying uses finitude to erase anxiety, when finitude is also what forces a choice about what matters. Turning an hourglass over does not change how much sand is left. If the verse really calms people, it does so not by removing uncertainty but by permitting a choice inside it.

Is copying members of Congress’s trades a real strategy? A Reddit debate ↗

14 Oct, 10:43 JST

Insider trading rules are widely described as not applying to members of Congress, who receive economic information early. One post points to a site tracking Nancy Pelosi’s trades, citing a return of +1011.46% since 2014, roughly three times the market index, and asks whether simply mirroring such trades works.

Editor’s take

A disclosure is a record that arrives late, and mirroring it means buying that delay along with the position. The headline return is a photograph of a race already finished, not the track under your own feet. If the filing lands after the price has moved, the price that produced that record is often gone.

If you haven’t already heard it, there’s a running joke that if you want to get rich, just copy Nancy Pelosi’s trades, one of the most notorious investors on capital hill. In fact, I just now found out there’s a whole website dedicated to exactly that, and according to said website, Nanci Pelosi’s seen a return of +1011.46% since 2014, three times the market index. So it seems like it really is a good strategy, and an easy one at that. It almost feels too good to be true. Paul as a false prophet? A forum argument over rejecting his letters ↗

14 Oct, 10:33 JST

In a Christianity forum, some users argue that Paul was a false prophet, that his teaching contradicts Jesus, or that his letters should be disregarded. Disagreements over the Law of Moses, women, sexuality, slavery and justification sit behind the argument.

Editor’s take

An argument about cutting a book out of the canon is rarely about the text itself; it is about who holds the key to reading it. Tearing a page from a cookbook does not remove the standard, it hands the standard to your own tongue. Rejecting Paul does not delete an authority, it seats a different one in the same chair.

r/Christianity · u/Morglin1000 · 1 points · 0 comments · Question I have noticed that, in some discussions on this subreddit, certain users argue that Paul was a false prophet, that his teachings contradict those of Jesus, or that Christians should disregard his letters altogether. This raises an important question about the place of Paul in Christianity, particularly when some of these arguments seem to arise from progressive or radically liberal approaches to interpreting the faith. To be clear, there are legitimate scholarly discussions about Paul. Christians disagree about how to interpret his statements on the Law of Moses, women, sexuality, slavery, justification and the relationship between faith and works. Some also debate whether particular passages reflect Paul's historical circumstances, how his letters should be understood within their original context, and whether certain texts attributed to him were written by Paul himself. These are not inherently unreasonable questions. However, there is a difference between critically interpreting Paul and dismissing his authority altogether. Paul was not a marginal figure in early Christianity. His letters are among the earliest surviving Christian writings, and his ministry played a fundamental role in the spread of Christianity among the Gentiles. His understanding of Christ, the Resurrection, grace, the Church and Christian moral life has shaped virtually every major Christian tradition. The New Testament itself presents Paul as someone whose ministry was connected to the other apostles, although the relationship between Paul and figures such as Peter and James was not without tension. Acts portrays his conversion and missionary work, while Paul's own letters provide firsthand evidence of his theological convictions and his interactions with the earliest Christian communities. Philippines' largest crypto exchange Coins.ph said to face central bank action ↗

14 Oct, 10:00 JST

Coins.ph, described as the largest crypto exchange in the Philippines, is reported to face regulatory action from the central bank. Specific measures and timing are not yet clear.

Editor’s take

When a regulator moves, it signals that user assets may not be fully inside the visible rulebook. It is like a bank branch lowering its shutters while the balance screen goes dark. Whether the measures are published will determine whether users can verify their own position from the outside.

A wealthy poster asks why gratitude feels so hard ↗

14 Oct, 09:33 JST

A blog post on r/Christianity: raised with money, food and schooling, the writer feels something is missing and wants a Christian partner of ordinary means.

Editor’s take

The post blames money for the emptiness, yet nothing it describes shows wealth itself producing that feeling; the complaints are about people, not possessions. Swapping the fish while leaving the water unchanged is the move being proposed. If the same arrogance turns up in a poorer circle, the diagnosis collapses.

r/Christianity · u/Icy-Engineer-6937 · 0 points · 0 comments · Blog So, I am just going to say it here. I was born in a relatively wealthy family, all my life has been good I can eat good food and get decent education. But something just feels missing. Coming from a relatively wealthy family, almost all of my social circles are wealthy people. So in short, my connection is just mostly rich idiots who are very very arrogant. Heck, even my sibling started to become an asshole because of this, she becomes very arrogant. This also affects me deeply. I want a Christian normal economic woman as my girlfriend not because I want to domineer but because I have dated wealthy women all of them are materialistic at least the one who I dated before. So I broke up with them. Sometimes, I desire a Christian farmer woman but my social circle simply does not allow for this situation to happen. I can’t even go to any random farm, because I have no time. I also sometimes despise my parents and relatives, they keep saying “date within your economic bracket/class”. This is also the reason I pray that my gf is not coming from an elite economic class every single night. Being relatively wealthy is not a boon, in my experience its a bane. FYI, I respect farmers a lot. Without the, civilization won’t exist because who will grow our food?

Handmade prayer beads and the question of which prayer goes where ↗

14 Oct, 09:25 JST

A post in r/Christianity shows handmade beads in four kinds: small, large, and each of those between knots. The maker plans the Jesus Prayer on the small beads and the Lord's Prayer on the large ones between knots, and asks what to use for the remaining two.

Editor’s take

Asking how to assign prayers to a string you made yourself is less about doctrine than about turning belief into a daily order. Like placing your own bookmarks in a book, where the pauses fall is the owner's decision. Once the assignments are settled, the beads stop being a craft object and become a device that fixes the sequence of a day.

How credible are the allegations about Blockstream's mining business? ↗

14 Oct, 09:22 JST

A Reddit post asks how credible natinfosec's articles are, which allege Blockstream's cloud mining is a Ponzi scheme and that investors were misled.

Editor’s take

The reality of a mining business cannot be confirmed from the numbers visible outside it. When you cannot look down the well before drinking, accusations and defenses drift at the same weight. In cases like this, what matters is less who is right than who holds the means of verification.

Pope Leo has lung cancer, Vatican says after surgery ↗

14 Oct, 09:18 JST

An NPR link shared on r/worldnews: the Vatican announced that Pope Leo has lung cancer after surgery. Only the headline and link are given, not the article.

Editor’s take

Naming the illness turns prayer into something specific, and it also puts the waiting time under public view. U.S. blockade keeps Iranian crude exports at zero in October ↗

14 Oct, 09:09 JST

A Reddit post shares a report saying the U.S. blockade kept Iranian crude exports at zero in October, linking to a Reuters article.

Editor’s take

A report that the blockade keeps exports at zero shows sanctions now directly manipulate market supply. It is like damming a river: the water level downstream changes without any new demand. Editor’s take

Even if there is no written limit on renewals, immigration officers judge each entry from scratch. It is like shopping at the same store every day but never knowing if the same clerk will be there. Strive raising $500 million to buy more bitcoin via a new preferred share class ↗

14 Oct, 08:23 JST

Strive is raising $500 million through a new class of preferred shares, with the proceeds intended for additional bitcoin purchases.

Editor’s take

When a company's treasury bets on an asset's price rather than on its own operations, shareholders end up buying the market's temperature instead of the business. Funding bitcoin with preferred shares sits one step away from borrowing money to buy a lottery ticket. Profit will be called courage and loss will be called speculation, though the mechanism is identical in both cases.

Will Spanish vocational training count in Japan? A would-be mover's question ↗

14 Oct, 06:06 JST

A poster from Spain considering a move to Japan asks whether two years of technical training plus two years of advanced training in audiovisual work, internships included, are recognized in Japan or the US.

Editor’s take

Whether a credential travels is decided less by what was learned than by whether the reviewer's lookup table has a row for it. A phrasebook gets you through a greeting, not a residency interview. r/movingtojapan · u/_frosts · 1 points · 1 comments · Education I'm considering moving to Japan. Not decided yet, just looking up information and educating myself to see possible options and mostly out of curiosity. I investigated a bit and I'm still unable to find the information I need regarding my studies. I am from Spain, finished highschool and studied what's called here a 'professional formartion': two years of a technical/professional formation + another 2 years of an advanced professional formation. Including internship in two different companies, which is required here to be able to obtain the title. Both related to the audiovisual industry. From what I understand this education is not officially recognized in either the US and Japan? Please correct me if i'm wrong. I have also been working as a video editor, graphic designer and illustrator for almost 2 years now. So what I'm wondering is if my education and professional experience would have any value there. If I would have any future in this industry. If getting a university degree in Japan would give me more chances or it wouldn't really make a difference. And yes I am also learning japanese.
